Chapter 5 - What Victor Did to Me

Â
Â
Ethan and Victor took the stairs.
Naomi went ahead through a service route after finding an old floor plan on her phone.
Floor fourteen smelled like dust and river damp.
Room 1418 stood open.
Inside was a chair.
A camera.
A television.
No Elena.
The screen turned on.
Ethan appeared on it.
Three years younger.
Sitting in the blue salon at Whitmore estate.
Deputy Commissioner Alan Voss sat across from him.
Ethan remembered the meeting.
He had been fighting for approval on a riverfront apartment project.
Voss had stalled it for months.
Victor arranged dinner.
The video showed Voss saying:
"You understand what I need."
Then Ethan passed him a thick envelope.
The clip stopped.
A second version played.
This time it started twenty-two minutes earlier.
Voss was reviewing architectural documents.
He asked for revised public-access drawings.
Ethan placed them into the envelope.
No bribe.
No cash.
Just a cut.
A lie created by removing time.
Ethan looked at Victor.
"You gave this to family court."
Victor nodded.
"Along with audio from the night Elena disappeared."
"What audio?"
The television changed.
Ethan heard himself shouting.
"If you walk out that door, I swear I'll make you regret it!"
His stomach dropped.
He remembered the sentence.
He had yelled it at Victor during an argument about a business deal two weeks before Elena vanished.
The audio had been laid under video of Elena packing a suitcase.
Ethan stared.
"You made it look like I threatened her."
"Yes."
"And you let a judge hear it."
"Yes."
Ethan moved toward him.
Victor did not back away.
"Hit me," he said.
Ethan stopped.
Victor's eyes were wet.
"Go ahead. It will feel like justice for six seconds."
Ethan's hands shook.
Then he lowered them.
"No."
Victor nodded once.
Maybe disappointed.
Maybe relieved.
Crane's voice came over the speaker.
"Beautiful. Growth. Now perhaps we can discuss Elena."
A door clicked open at the end of the corridor.
Naomi's voice whispered through Ethan's earpiece.
"Do not move. I found her."
Ethan's heart stopped.
"Where?"
"Room 1422. She's alive. Door wired to an alarm."
Crane continued speaking.
"Victor has spent years believing he controls the archive because his surname is on the building. He does not."
Victor looked toward the ceiling.
"What do you want?"
"The ballroom server and a signed statement that Elena stole the archive for extortion. Ethan signs too."
Ethan laughed without humor.
"Why me?"
"Because your story is useful. Angry husband. Missing wife. Unstable custody dispute. People understand domestic tragedy. They do not understand thirty years of surveillance."
Ethan felt cold.
Crane wanted another simple story.
One that buried the system inside a marriage.
Then Naomi whispered again.
"Ethan, Elena says don't sign anything."
His knees nearly gave out.
He had not heard those words from Elena in three years.
Not through a recorder.
Alive.
Nearby.
Crane said, "You have five minutes."
Then Elena's voice suddenly exploded through the hotel speakers.
"Miles, you forgot who taught me the old control board."
Every light on floor fourteen went out.
