Chapter 3 - The Blue Door

Â
Â
Owen Mercer had worked for the Whitmores for nineteen years.
Ethan never liked him.
That morning, he needed him alive and honest.
"Who took Elena?"
Owen sat against the boathouse wall while Naomi photographed the ropes before removing them completely.
"Miles Crane."
Victor's family attorney.
Ethan stared.
"The lawyer?"
"Not by himself."
Owen swallowed.
"Crane has been protecting the archive longer than Victor has."
Naomi asked, "Where did they go?"
"I don't know."
Ethan grabbed his jacket.
Naomi caught his wrist.
"Don't."
Owen flinched anyway.
Ethan let go.
"Then tell me what happened."
Owen looked toward the estate.
"Elena came back two months ago. I saw her on an exterior camera and erased the clip."
"Why help her?"
"Because I watched Victor use that archive for years."
"You helped him."
"Yes."
No excuse.
Owen continued.
"At first it was business leverage. A contractor caught cheating. A donor making threats. Then it became anything Victor wanted. Favors. Votes. Silence."
"And you stayed."
"Yes."
Ethan understood the shape of that answer too well.
Owen said Elena found an older backup room beneath the ballroom.
She had been copying files one drive at a time.
Not stealing every secret.
Building proof that the surveillance system existed and that Victor had used selected clips to pressure people.
"Yesterday she copied the index."
Naomi leaned forward.
"What index?"
"Names. Dates. Rooms. Who accessed what."
Ethan felt cold.
Two hundred powerful people could survive embarrassing footage.
What terrified them was a catalog showing somebody possessed it.
"Crane found out," Owen said. "He came here after midnight with two men. Victor tried to stop him."
Ethan stared.
"Victor tried to protect Elena?"
Owen laughed bitterly.
"Victor tried to protect the archive. Different thing."
Good distinction.
"Crane took Elena and the index drive. He told Victor the estate sale had to happen today. Once the property changed hands, they could gut the old electrical rooms and say anything missing was demolition waste."
Naomi called Gabriel.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Ethan's heart jumped.
"Lily."
He ran back through the tunnel.
The marble panel was open when they reached the hidden room.
Ethan climbed into the ballroom.
Furniture had been overturned.
Victor's security men were gone.
Gabriel sat against a column holding an ice pack to his temple.
Lily was in his lap.
Ethan dropped beside her.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head and climbed into him.
"Uncle Victor yelled."
Victor stood twenty feet away with blood on his shirt cuff.
Not his blood.
Naomi said, "Where are your men?"
"Crane called them. Half walked out."
Victor looked less like the lord of Whitmore estate than a man watching his own walls change sides.
Ethan stood.
"You locked us under the floor."
"Because you were about to take the recorder and walk out without understanding what Crane would do."
"You could have said that."
Victor laughed once.
"Would you have listened?"
"Try me now."
Victor looked at Lily.
Then at the hidden opening.
"Crane has Elena. He has the index. And he has one other thing."
Ethan waited.
Victor's face tightened.
"The original clip that put you out of Lily's life."
Ethan went still.
"You edited it."
Victor did not deny it.
"Yes."
Lily looked up at her uncle.
"You lied about Daddy?"
Victor's face broke for half a second.
That mattered more than Ethan expected.
Then Gabriel's phone buzzed.
A message arrived from Elena's number.
One photograph.
Elena sitting in the back seat of a car.
Alive.
A newspaper in her lap showed that morning's date.
Under the image:
BRING VICTOR AND THE BALLROOM SERVER TO THE OLD WHITMORE HOTEL BY NOON.
Then a second message.
COME WITH POLICE AND EVERY FILE GOES PUBLIC.
Victor stared.
Ethan looked at him.
"What is the old Whitmore Hotel?"
Victor whispered, "Where my father first learned cameras were more useful than locks."
