Ownership became a legal question.
Control became a moral one.
The archive contained material that could prove crimes.
It also contained private moments that had nothing to do with wrongdoing.
Marriages.
Addiction.
Medical conversations.
Affairs.
Family fights.
People crying alone in rooms they believed were private.
Elena refused the simple solution of releasing everything.
"Exposure is not automatically justice," she told investigators.
Ethan agreed.
So did many victims.
A special review team was created under court supervision to separate evidence of crimes from unlawfully recorded private material with no public-interest value.
Ethan hated the process until he understood the alternative.
Victor had spent years deciding which secrets mattered based on usefulness.
The solution could not be another powerful person making the same decision alone.
David Orr testified.
So did Judge Avery.
Several businesspeople admitted they changed decisions after Victor threatened them.
Others denied it.
Some cases could be proven.
Some could not.
The myth of the archive was larger than the archive itself.
That had been part of its power.
People obeyed because they did not know what Victor had.
Elena testified before a grand jury.
When she returned, Ethan waited outside with coffee.
"How bad?"
"Boring."
"Good."
"Then terrible. Then boring again."
He handed her the cup.
She smiled.
They had not remarried.
They had not even moved back in together.
Ethan spent three nights a week at Elena's temporary apartment when Lily asked and when the parenting plan allowed.
Sometimes he slept on the couch.
Sometimes he went home.
The first time Elena kissed him again, it happened while they were arguing about dishwasher loading.
No music.
No speech.
They both laughed afterward.
"That was irresponsible," Elena said.
"Very."
"Again?"
"If you want."
She did.
Slow did not mean cold.
Meanwhile, Victor pleaded not guilty at first.
Then discovery began.
The Lily file changed him.
His attorney said he watched the clip of himself telling a five-year-old her father might be angry with her.
He requested a second meeting with prosecutors.
Ethan felt no sympathy.
Elena felt some.
Neither feeling controlled the case.
Victor eventually entered a cooperation agreement and pleaded guilty to multiple serious charges involving extortion, obstruction, unlawful surveillance, and interference with custody proceedings.
Crane went to trial.
He blamed Conrad.
Then Victor.
Then Elena.
The jury saw access logs.
Messages.
Payments.
Hotel footage.
The kidnapping evidence.
He was convicted on most major counts.
Not all.
Truth did not require a perfect score.
Afterward, Marianne asked Elena if she could visit Lily.
Elena did not answer for three weeks.
When she finally did, the answer was:
"Not yet."
Marianne replied:
I understand.
For once, she did not add anything else.
Then Lily asked a question nobody expected.
"Can we go back to the house?"
