Chapter 4 - The Hotel With No Guests

Â
Â
The old Whitmore Hotel had been closed for eleven years.
It stood near the river, twenty stories of dark windows and boarded entrances waiting for a redevelopment plan Victor never completed.
Ethan wanted police.
Naomi wanted police too.
Victor refused.
"Crane has material on judges, prosecutors, cops. If he sees a marked car, Elena's face could be on every screen in Chicago before we reach the lobby."
"So we do what he says?"
"No. We stop pretending this is only a kidnapping."
Victor walked to a cabinet beneath the ballroom stage.
Behind it was a server unit the size of a suitcase.
He disconnected it.
Lily watched from Ethan's arms.
"Is that Mommy's computer?"
"No," Ethan said.
Victor looked at him.
For once, they agreed not to explain more.
Naomi arranged for an off-duty federal contact to be informed without approaching the hotel.
No raid.
No heroics.
Backup outside the visible perimeter.
Then Ethan faced Victor.
"You are going to tell me everything before we drive anywhere."
Victor laughed.
"We don't have time."
Ethan set the server case on the floor.
"Then we don't move."
Victor stared.
Ethan continued.
"You lied about Elena. You lied about me. You kept my daughter from me. You do not get one more 'trust me.'"
Lily buried her face in Ethan's shoulder.
Victor looked away.
Then he started talking.
Their father, Conrad, installed hidden cameras after a business partner tried to extort him in the 1990s.
At first the system covered offices.
Then guest suites.
Conrad told himself he was protecting the family.
Victor inherited access after Conrad died.
"I used it," Victor said.
"How many times?"
"I don't know."
"That's a lie."
Victor closed his eyes.
"Hundreds."
Ethan felt sick.
He thought about dinners.
Fundraisers.
Weekends when people slept under this roof assuming walls were walls.
"Did Elena know?"
"Not until three years ago."
"Why did you frame me?"
Victor's jaw tightened.
"Because she said she was going to take the archive to a reporter."
"So you destroyed our family."
"I contained her."
Ethan nearly hit him.
The only thing that stopped him was Lily's weight in his arms.
Victor saw it.
"Good," he said quietly.
"What?"
"Three years ago you would have hit me."
Ethan hated that there was truth in it.
After Elena vanished, Ethan had broken a photographer's camera outside court.
Shoved Victor at a hearing.
Screamed in hallways.
Victor used every moment to support the edited video.
Ethan had helped make the lie believable.
That was his part.
Not the same as Victor's.
Still his.
Victor continued.
"Crane was Dad's attorney. He knew the archive existed before I did. I thought he worked for us."
"He worked for the secret."
Victor nodded.
They drove to the hotel in separate cars.
Lily stayed with Gabriel and a court-appointed child advocate who arrived before they left.
She cried when Ethan tried to go.
"You came back today."
Ethan crouched.
"And I'm coming back again."
"Promise?"
"Yes."
He hated promises after three lost years.
Made it anyway.
At the old hotel, the lobby doors were unlocked.
A single light burned at the front desk.
On it sat Elena's wedding ring.
The same ring Ethan had found three years earlier.
He picked it up.
A speaker crackled overhead.
Miles Crane's voice filled the empty lobby.
"Mr. Cole. Victor. Welcome."
Victor whispered, "He's in the control room."
The elevator doors opened by themselves.
Inside, someone had written in black marker across the mirror:
FLOOR 14.
Ethan stepped in.
Victor grabbed his arm.
"No mirrors."
"What?"
Victor's face had gone white.
"That floor is where Dad tested the hidden system. Every room has cameras. Every mirror has another side."
