Chapter 6 - Elena

Emergency lights flashed red.
A door slammed.
Someone shouted.
Ethan ran toward Room 1422.
Naomi met him in the corridor.
"Slow down."
"Where is she?"
"Inside. She disabled the magnetic contact but not the pressure alarm."
Ethan stared through the narrow opening.
Elena stood on the other side.
Alive.
Thinner.
Hair shorter.
A bruise at her temple.
For three years Ethan had imagined this moment until imagination became cruelty.
He expected himself to rush forward.
Elena raised one hand.
He stopped.
Good.
"Hi," she whispered.
Ethan laughed once and then started crying.
"Hi."
No embrace.
Not yet.
Naomi worked on the pressure sensor.
Victor stayed at the stairwell, watching the corridor.
Elena looked at Ethan.
"Lily?"
"Safe."
Her face collapsed.
"She found you?"
"She ran to me."
Elena covered her mouth.
"I told her only if the house got quiet."
"She thought you were under the floor."
A broken laugh escaped Elena.
"For eight weeks, I mostly was."
The sensor clicked.
Naomi opened the door.
Elena stepped out.
Ethan did not move until she did.
Then she walked into him.
His arms closed around her.
Not because three years vanished.
Because she chose the last three feet.
They held each other for ten seconds.
Maybe twenty.
Then Elena stepped away.
"We can't stay."
"Crane?"
"He has the index drive, but I copied it."
She touched the hem of her jacket.
A memory card had been sewn inside.
Victor stared.
"You had a copy?"
"I had three. You found one. Crane found one."
"Where's the third?"
Elena looked at Ethan.
"With someone Victor blackmailed."
Victor's face changed.
"Who?"
"David Orr."
The councilman from the blue salon.
Ethan remembered Victor once bragging that Orr had "finally learned reason."
Elena said Orr had spent years terrified Victor would release footage of his adult son in rehab during a private family visit.
Nothing criminal.
Just cruel.
Victor used shame where law offered no leverage.
Ethan looked at him.
"You did that?"
Victor nodded.
"Yes."
No excuse.
Then footsteps thundered from the stairwell.
Crane's men.
Naomi pulled Ethan and Elena into the room.
Victor remained outside.
"Go," he said.
Ethan stared.
"What are you doing?"
"Buying time."
Elena's face hardened.
"Victor, don't perform redemption with a gun."
He almost smiled.
"I don't have one."
That mattered.
He closed the door.
Naomi led Ethan and Elena through a connecting bathroom into Room 1424, then into an old laundry chute access passage.
They descended two floors.
Behind them, shouting.
No gunshots.
Good.
At floor twelve, federal agents entered from a service stairwell.
Naomi had kept her quiet contact updated.
Crane's threat about police mattered.
It did not give him veto power over law enforcement forever.
Elena was escorted out through a loading dock.
Ethan followed.
In the ambulance bay, she grabbed his sleeve.
"Don't let them make Victor the whole story."
Ethan looked at her.
"After what he did?"
"He did terrible things."
"Then?"
Elena swallowed.
"Your riverfront permit came through because he blackmailed Orr."
Ethan's stomach tightened.
"I didn't know."
"I know."
She looked him straight in the eyes.
"But you knew Victor made impossible problems disappear, and you never asked how."
Ethan had no answer.
Then an agent approached.
"Mr. Cole, we have Crane."
"And Victor?"
The agent hesitated.
"He's gone."
Elena closed her eyes.
Ethan said, "He helped us get out."
"Maybe."
The agent handed Ethan a phone recovered from the hotel.
One unsent message from Victor to Lily.
I am sorry I taught you your father stopped looking. I knew he didn't.
