Chapter 9 - The Daughter They Planned For

The trust document was thirty-eight pages long.

Nathan read every line twice.

Thomas Archer had changed the family voting structure after Rebecca's crash but before his own death.

Any biological grandchild of Thomas would receive eleven percent of voting control upon verified birth.

That eleven percent, combined with Nathan's shares and Margaret's, could remove Graham as chairman.

Rebecca looked sick.

"He knew I was pregnant."

Margaret nodded.

"Thomas found the pregnancy test in the clinic records. He amended the trust secretly."

Nathan stared at the date.

"Then Graham had a reason to keep Lucy off the books."

"Or control her," Rebecca said.

The next morning, that theory became real.

Two child welfare investigators arrived at the hotel with police.

They carried an emergency order claiming Rebecca Blake had abducted a child from the legal custody of the Archer family six years earlier.

Rebecca nearly laughed from shock.

"That's insane."

The lead investigator looked uncomfortable.

"Ma'am, the order says Rebecca Archer was declared legally incompetent before delivery."

Nathan stepped between them and Lucy.

"Who filed this?"

"Archer Family Guardianship Services."

Graham.

Rebecca's lawyer, Sarah Keene, arrived twenty minutes later carrying a temporary stay from a judge.

"Nobody moves that child," she said. "Not until we determine whether the underlying documents are authentic."

The police backed off.

Lucy clung to Nathan's hand even though she had known him less than two days.

That almost broke him.

Later, Sarah spread documents across the hotel table.

"Here's the strangest part."

She showed them Lucy's birth certificate.

Father: Nathan Archer.

Nathan stared.

"I never signed an acknowledgment."

"There's one on file."

Sarah turned another page.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF PATERNITY.

Electronic Signature: Nathan Archer.

Rebecca whispered, "They forged it."

Sarah nodded.

"Probably. But legally, it means someone wanted Nathan established as the father from day one."

Nathan frowned.

"Why would Graham do that if he wanted Lucy hidden?"

Sarah tapped the trust.

"Because the voting shares only activate if paternity is verified. Graham couldn't erase Lucy completely. He needed her legal existence tied to the family so her shares would remain inside the Archer structure."

Rebecca's face hardened.

"He wanted a child he could control."

"Exactly."

Nathan took a DNA test that afternoon.

The result came back the next morning.

99.99 percent probability.

Lucy was his daughter.

For ten minutes, Nathan could not stop crying.

He sat on the floor beside the hotel bed while Lucy showed him a drawing of three stick figures holding hands.

"That's you," she said.

"I figured. You gave me the blue suit."

"You wear too much blue."

Rebecca laughed despite herself.

It was the first warm sound between them.

Then Sarah's phone rang.

Her expression changed as she listened.

"We have a problem."

Nathan stood.

"What?"

Sarah turned her laptop around.

The metadata on the paternity form showed the digital template had been created eight days before Rebecca's crash.

Before anyone outside the clinic should have known she was pregnant.

Nathan looked at Rebecca.

"They knew about Lucy before you did."

Rebecca's face went white.

And suddenly the crash no longer looked like a reaction to Rebecca finding the files.

It looked planned around the baby.
