Chapter 5 - Patient Forty-Seven

Nathan returned to the hotel before dawn.

Rebecca was awake.

Lucy slept sideways across the bed, one sock missing.

Nathan quietly told Rebecca everything Margaret had said.

She listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she asked one question.

"Do you believe her?"

"I believe she knows more than she admitted."

"That's not the same thing."

"No."

Rebecca opened the cashbox again.

This time she removed a flash drive wrapped in tissue.

"I was saving this for the day someone found me."

"What's on it?"

"The reason I disappeared."

Nathan stared at her.

"You had it all this time?"

"A copy. Not everything."

They plugged it into Maya's isolated laptop.

Folders appeared.

GUARDIAN REVIEW.

ASSET PROTECTION.

FAMILY STABILITY.

The names sounded harmless.

The contents did not.

For twenty years, the Archer Foundation had quietly partnered with law firms, private medical practices, and banks to manage trusts belonging to vulnerable heirs.

At first glance it looked legal.

Then Nathan saw the pattern.

A young heir was declared unstable.

A spouse was labeled predatory.

A parent was deemed medically incompetent.

The foundation stepped in as temporary guardian or trustee.

Temporary became indefinite.

Control of the money shifted.

Fees accumulated.

Property changed hands.

Voting rights moved into entities connected to the Archers.

"How many?" Nathan whispered.

Rebecca scrolled.

"At least eighty families in the files I copied. Probably more."

Nathan found his own digital initials on three approval pages.

"I never saw these."

"I know that now."

He looked at her.

"You didn't know then."

Rebecca's eyes dropped.

"No."

"You thought I was part of it."

"The system used your credentials. Your name was on everything."

Nathan sat back.

"Why were you looking in the first place?"

Rebecca hesitated.

"Because one of the families was mine."

He stared at her.

She opened a folder.

BENNETT FAMILY TRUST.

Rebecca's maiden name.

Her older brother, David Bennett, had inherited a settlement after a construction accident killed their parents. At twenty-one, David had been declared financially incompetent after a drug arrest.

The Archer Foundation became trustee.

Two years later, David died in a rehabilitation center.

The trust had been almost empty.

"You never told me this."

"I didn't know the Archer connection until after we married."

Nathan wanted to be angry.

Instead, he saw the same thing in her face that he had been carrying for seven years.

A family grave with missing answers.

Rebecca clicked another file.

A video appeared.

Nathan's father, Thomas Archer, sat in his home office. The timestamp was the night before Rebecca's crash.

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, something has gone wrong. Rebecca found the guardian files. I verified enough to know the program has been corrupted. Graham is not acting alone."

Nathan leaned closer.

His father's face tightened.

"If anything happens to Rebecca, do not assume Nathan ordered it. And if anything happens to me—"

The video glitched.

Then resumed.

"—my son is next."

The screen went black.

Nathan barely heard Rebecca whisper his name.

Because Thomas Archer had died eleven months after Rebecca.

And suddenly his father's death no longer looked natural.
