Chapter 12 - My Name in the Ledger

Nathan had always believed he controlled Archer Holdings.

He was chief executive.

He voted shares.

He signed acquisitions worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Yet Thomas's ledger said his personal trust was restricted.

Sarah Keene pulled the family trust instruments that afternoon.

Her expression became grim.

"Nathan, your shares are real. Your authority is real. But technically, forty percent of your voting block is held through a protective trust created when you were seventeen."

"Protective from what?"

"Your own incapacity."

Nathan stared at her.

"I'm not incapacitated."

"Correct. But the trust has never been terminated."

Rebecca leaned over the document.

"Who is trustee?"

Sarah pointed.

MARGARET ARCHER, PRIMARY.

GRAHAM ARCHER, SUCCESSOR.

Nathan laughed once.

"So if my mother steps down or dies, Graham can control part of my vote."

"If he establishes a triggering condition."

"Such as?"

Sarah read.

"Severe emotional instability, substance dependence, cognitive impairment, or conduct threatening the preservation of family assets."

Rebecca looked at Nathan.

"The same language they used on me."

Now it made sense.

Rebecca's disappearance had broken Nathan.

For nearly a year after the funeral, he drank too much, missed work, stopped answering calls.

Graham had stepped in to "help."

"He wanted me unstable," Nathan said.

Margaret, sitting across the room, looked down.

Nathan turned on her.

"You knew about this trust."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you terminate it when I turned eighteen?"

"Your father asked me not to."

"Why?"

Margaret's voice was quiet.

"Because he believed Graham was already building a case to control you. Thomas wanted me in the trustee seat instead."

Nathan stared.

"You protected me by leaving the weapon loaded?"

"I was afraid removing it would alert Graham."

Rebecca stood abruptly.

"That's the problem with this family. Every terrible decision gets called protection."

No one argued.

Maya interrupted from the doorway.

"We found Nora's attacker."

Nathan looked up.

"Who?"

"A former Archer Foundation security contractor named Leo Mercer. He was picked up trying to cross into Canada."

"Did he talk?"

"Enough."

Maya put a recorded interview on the television.

Leo appeared in a police room, exhausted.

"I was told to scare the nurse and recover anything she kept."

An investigator asked, "Who told you?"

Leo hesitated.

"Graham Archer."

Nathan exhaled.

Then Leo continued.

"But the order came through the old Aurora channel."

Nathan leaned closer.

"What does that mean?"

The investigator asked the same question.

Leo looked at the camera.

"Means Graham isn't the only one with the token."

"Who else?"

Leo swallowed.

"I don't know the name. We called them First Guardian."

Rebecca's hand found Nathan's.

The program had a founder.

A chairman.

A doctor.

And apparently someone above them all.
