Chapter 13 - First Guardian

For the next twenty-four hours, Nathan stopped trying to solve his marriage and started trying to understand the machine that had destroyed it.

Maya mapped the Aurora logins.

Most came from Archer Foundation offices.

Three did not.

One came from Dr. Pruitt's clinic.

One from a bank law department.

One from a private residence registered to Margaret's late sister, Anne.

The house had been empty for twenty-nine years.

"That's impossible," Margaret said.

"Someone is using the old line," Maya replied.

Nathan looked at his mother.

"Who had access to Anne's house?"

"Family. Staff. Thomas."

"Graham?"

"He was thirteen when Anne died."

Rebecca looked up.

"Then First Guardian predates Graham."

That changed everything.

Margaret had started the program.

But someone else had learned to operate through it before Graham was old enough to take control.

They drove to Anne's old house with police nearby.

The property was dusty but maintained by a family trust.

In the basement, Maya found a hardwired terminal behind a false wall.

The screen still worked.

One program opened automatically.

AURORA.

Rows of family names appeared.

Bennett.

Archer.

Mercer.

Hollis.

Dozens more.

Rebecca scrolled.

"This goes back thirty years."

Nathan found Anne's file.

SUBJECT: ANNE ARCHER WELLS.

STATUS: TERMINATED.

He stared at the word.

"Terminated what? Guardianship?"

Margaret did not answer.

Rebecca opened the activity history.

The final entry was dated two days before Anne's suicide.

EMERGENCY INTERVENTION APPROVED.

AUTHORIZED BY: FIRST GUARDIAN.

Nathan turned to his mother.

"You told us her husband destroyed her."

"He did."

"Then what is this?"

Margaret's face had gone gray.

"I don't know."

Maya clicked the user profile.

FIRST GUARDIAN.

Account created thirty-two years ago.

Recovery email hidden.

Biometric backup registered.

"We may be able to extract the fingerprint hash," Maya said.

A sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard.

Nathan raised a hand.

Police were outside.

Someone was inside.

A shadow crossed the basement doorway.

Rebecca pulled Margaret behind the desk.

Nathan grabbed an iron fireplace tool from the wall.

A man descended the stairs.

Graham.

He held no weapon.

He looked terrified.

"Lock the door," he said.

Nathan did not move.

"You attacked Nora."

"I ordered Mercer to get the ledger. I did not order him to hurt her."

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

"Comforting distinction."

Graham looked at the terminal.

"You found Aurora."

"Who's First Guardian?" Nathan demanded.

Graham shook his head.

"I don't know."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I took over the program twelve years ago. The account was already there. Every time I tried to disable it, legal instructions appeared using Father's credentials."

Nathan went still.

"Dad?"

"I thought he was controlling it. Then he died and the account kept issuing orders."

Margaret whispered, "What orders?"

Graham looked at her.

"Rebecca's crash wasn't mine."

Rebecca froze.

"What?"

"I discovered the files were copied. I planned to confront her. Before I could, Aurora issued an intervention order."

Nathan stepped closer.

"Who ordered the crash?"

Graham looked at the glowing screen.

"First Guardian."

Then every light in the basement went out.
