Chapter 4 - My Mother Already Knew

Rebecca ran the last half block to the park.

Lucy was still there.

So was the neighbor, confused and frightened when Rebecca grabbed the child hard enough to make her squeak.

"Mom!"

"We're going home."

Nathan scanned the street.

A black SUV idled near the corner.

The moment he looked directly at it, it pulled away.

"Not your apartment," he said.

Rebecca shook her head.

"I'm not going anywhere your family controls."

"Then choose the place."

They ended up in a downtown hotel registered under Maya Chen's name.

Lucy fell asleep watching cartoons with the volume low.

Rebecca sat by the window.

Nathan stood near the door, staring at the old photograph from his wallet.

"Why didn't my mother tell me?"

Rebecca gave him a tired look.

"You're asking the wrong question."

"What's the right one?"

"Why did she help them convince me you were dangerous?"

Nathan had no answer.

At 2:00 a.m., Margaret called again.

"Come alone," she said. "If you want the truth, come to the house."

Nathan went.

The Archer estate sat thirty minutes outside the city behind stone walls and old maple trees. He had grown up there. That night it felt like a crime scene waiting for yellow tape.

Margaret met him in the library.

Seventy-two years old, silver-haired, elegant, she looked exactly as she had at Rebecca's funeral.

That realization made him furious.

"Seven years."

Margaret closed the library doors.

"I know."

"You watched me bury her."

"There was no body in that casket."

"I know that now."

His voice broke.

"You let me grieve her."

Margaret's eyes shone.

"Because grief was safer than knowledge."

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"You sound insane."

"Maybe. But you're alive."

She poured herself water with a trembling hand.

"Rebecca found files she was never supposed to see. Graham discovered she had copied them. He panicked. Your father tried to protect her."

Nathan went still.

"Dad knew?"

"Yes."

"Then why was Rebecca taken to a clinic?"

Margaret looked away.

"Because Graham had already contacted Pruitt. I arrived after the crash. Rebecca was alive. Graham wanted her charged and institutionalized permanently. I convinced him she would be easier to control if everyone believed she was dead."

Nathan stared at her.

"You call that protecting her?"

"I kept Graham from killing her."

"You stole seven years from us."

Margaret flinched.

"I know."

Nathan pulled the hospital directive from his coat.

"Did you forge my signature?"

"No."

"Did you know someone did?"

She hesitated.

That was enough.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Nathan stepped closer.

"Mom."

"Your credentials were copied before the accident. Your father discovered it. That's why he began an internal audit."

"The audit that disappeared after he died?"

Margaret nodded.

Nathan felt the room narrowing around him.

"Rebecca says you signed her medical hold."

Margaret looked genuinely confused.

"I did not."

Nathan took out his phone.

Rebecca had sent him a photograph while he drove over.

PATIENT 47: REBECCA ARCHER.

Involuntary neurological observation.

Authorized by: MARGARET ELAINE ARCHER.

Margaret's face drained of color.

"That's not my signature."

Nathan almost laughed.

"Apparently nobody in this family signs their own name anymore."

Then Margaret grabbed his wrist.

"Nathan, your father saw the same thing before he died. Documents signed by people who swore they never signed them."

"What are you saying?"

Her eyes filled with something close to terror.

"I'm saying Rebecca wasn't the first person they erased."
