Chapter 11 - The Red Bucket

The red bucket had a false bottom.
Nathan found it after midnight when Lucy was asleep.
A thin seam circled the base. He used a butter knife to pry it open.
Inside was a brass key and a folded note.
The handwriting belonged to Thomas Archer.
Nathan knew because his father had written birthday cards in the same sharp, slanted script for thirty-five years.
NATHAN,
IF THIS REACHES YOU, THE PROGRAM SURVIVED ME.
DO NOT TRUST THE FAMILY ARCHIVE.
GO TO UNION STATION. LOCKER 214.
BRING REBECCA.
Nathan read it twice.
Rebecca looked over his shoulder.
"Either your father is alive, or somebody had access to his handwriting."
Margaret stood near the window, pale.
"Thomas is dead. I saw him die."
"You saw Pruitt pronounce him," Nathan said. "That's not the same thing anymore."
At 6:00 a.m., Nathan and Rebecca went to Union Station with Maya watching cameras remotely.
Locker 214 sat in an old baggage corridor beneath the main hall.
The brass key fit.
Inside was a black document case.
No cash.
No weapon.
Just paper.
Dozens of original guardianship agreements.
Medical affidavits.
Bank transfer instructions.
And a handwritten ledger.
Rebecca turned pages quickly.
"These are the families from my files."
Nathan pointed to initials beside each case.
G.A.
M.A.
T.A.
D.P.
Graham Archer.
Margaret Archer.
Thomas Archer.
Dr. Pruitt.
Then Rebecca found a name that made her sit down.
DAVID BENNETT.
Next to her brother's case was a red notation.
CAPACITY REPORT ALTERED AFTER REFUSAL.
AUTHORIZED OVERRIDE: G.A.
Graham.
Rebecca covered her mouth.
"He did it."
Nathan took her hand.
For once, she let him.
Then Maya's voice came through his earpiece.
"Nathan, leave. Now."
"Why?"
"Three men just entered the corridor. They're not station security."
Nathan closed the case.
"Back exit?"
"Twenty yards behind you. Door with red sign."
They ran.
A man shouted.
Rebecca hit the emergency bar and they burst into a service alley as footsteps thundered behind them.
Nathan pulled her toward the street.
A sedan screeched around the corner.
Maya was driving.
"Get in!"
They threw themselves into the back seat.
As the car accelerated, Rebecca opened the ledger again.
"There's something else."
On the final page, Thomas had written a list titled ACTIVE CHILD BENEFICIARIES.
Lucy's name was there.
Next to it:
LUCY ARCHER — 11% VOTING INTEREST — CONTROL TRANSFER PENDING.
Beneath that was another line.
NATHAN ARCHER — PERSONAL TRUST STATUS: RESTRICTED.
Nathan frowned.
"Restricted?"
Maya glanced at him in the mirror.
"What does that mean?"
Nathan looked at Margaret's initials beside the entry.
For the first time, he wondered if Lucy was not the only Archer whose life had been legally controlled without his knowledge.
