Chapter 17 - The Man Who Wanted to Be Found

Edward Wells contacted them that night.

Not by phone.

The television in Nathan's hotel suite turned black during the news.

Then a video feed appeared.

An old man sat in a dim room.

White hair.

Cane beside his chair.

Black oval ring.

Lucy had drawn him perfectly.

Margaret whispered, "Edward."

The man smiled.

"Hello, Margaret."

Nathan stepped toward the screen.

"You touched my daughter."

"I gave her a bucket."

"You orchestrated Rebecca's disappearance."

Edward's expression remained calm.

"I preserved the program."

Rebecca stood beside Nathan.

"You almost killed me."

"You were never supposed to die. The crash was designed to make death believable. Pruitt exceeded instructions."

Rebecca's hands shook.

"You kept me drugged."

"I kept you unavailable."

Nathan's voice dropped.

"Why arrange for me to find them now?"

Edward leaned back.

"Because Graham became reckless. He confused ownership with stewardship."

Margaret stared at the screen.

"You used my program for thirty years."

Edward laughed softly.

"Your program? Margaret, you gave wealthy families a way to legalize fear. I simply understood the market."

"Anne died because of you."

For the first time, his face changed.

"Anne died because she would not let you control her. You blamed me because that was easier than admitting your response to her death became the blueprint for everything that followed."

Margaret looked shattered.

Nathan hated Edward for the cruelty.

He hated more that part of it was true.

"What do you want?" Nathan asked.

"A clean succession."

"To whom?"

Edward smiled.

"Not Graham."

Nathan's stomach tightened.

"Me?"

"You were always the better candidate. Ethical enough to be trusted. Guilty enough to be guided."

Nathan understood then.

Edward did not want the family destroyed.

He wanted Nathan to inherit the machine.

"No."

Edward's smile faded.

"You haven't heard the offer."

"I don't need to."

Rebecca looked at Nathan.

He continued.

"Every guardianship gets reviewed. Every family gets notified. Every hidden trust gets audited. The program ends."

Edward's eyes hardened.

"Then you will destroy people you think you're saving. There are unstable heirs. Predatory spouses. Addicts. Abusers. The world is not improved by pretending everyone should control everything simply because their name is on paper."

Nathan shook his head.

"Maybe. But you don't get to become their owner."

Edward leaned toward the camera.

"Careful. That sentence will cost you more than you understand."

The screen went black.

Maya's phone rang immediately.

She answered, listened, and closed her eyes.

"What?" Rebecca asked.

Maya looked at Nathan.

"Archer Holdings' lenders just froze two credit facilities. Three major clients terminated contracts. Someone released documents claiming you're mentally unstable and the company concealed it."

Edward had not threatened Nathan's life.

He had threatened the structure Nathan used to protect everyone around him.

And he had started before the video call ended.
