Chapter 15 - The Boardroom Trap

The Archer Foundation boardroom had glass walls and a view of the river.
Nathan had spent years believing important decisions happened there.
That morning, he understood most important decisions had been made somewhere else.
Graham sat at the head of the table.
Margaret sat beside Nathan.
Rebecca sat with Sarah and Maya.
Lucy was safe three buildings away under police protection.
Graham opened the meeting.
"I move that Nathan Archer be temporarily suspended pending evaluation of conduct that threatens family assets."
Nathan almost admired the speed.
"You're using the trust clause."
"I'm using the tools available to protect this organization."
Rebecca leaned forward.
"From the evidence?"
Graham looked at her.
"From chaos."
Nathan placed Thomas's ledger on the table.
"Then let's discuss chaos."
Maya projected the Aurora files.
Medical holds.
Altered capacity reports.
Trust transfers.
Unauthorized digital signatures.
Board members who had spent years looking bored suddenly stopped moving.
Sarah distributed sworn statements from Nora Bell and other former employees.
Then Nathan played Thomas's video.
When his dead father's face appeared on the wall, Graham closed his eyes.
The vote to suspend Nathan never happened.
Instead, three board members demanded Graham resign.
He refused.
Margaret stood.
"Then I invoke the Thomas Archer grandchild provision."
Graham's head snapped up.
"There is no verified grandchild."
Nathan slid the DNA report across the table.
"There is now."
For the first time, Graham looked afraid.
Nathan, Margaret, and Lucy's trust together controlled enough votes.
Graham was removed as chairman at 11:17 a.m.
It should have felt like victory.
It lasted four minutes.
Then federal agents entered the boardroom.
Not for Rebecca.
Not for Nathan.
For Graham.
The lead agent placed a warrant on the table covering fraud, obstruction, kidnapping-related offenses, and conspiracy.
Graham stood slowly.
Before they took him, he looked at Nathan.
"You think this ends with me?"
"No."
Graham gave a strange, exhausted smile.
"Good. Because I spent twelve years obeying a ghost."
Nathan said nothing.
Graham's eyes moved to Margaret.
"Ask Mother why Anne's husband never had an open casket."
Margaret went white.
The agents led him away.
That afternoon, the Aurora backup produced a biometric match.
Maya called Nathan into a private office.
"We decoded part of the First Guardian profile."
"Who is it?"
"We don't have a name yet. But the fingerprint on the account matches an old employment file."
She turned the screen.
ARCHER FOUNDATION SPECIAL COUNSEL, 1994.
The photograph showed a younger man with dark hair and a black oval ring.
Name: EDWARD WELLS.
Anne's husband.
Nathan stared.
"He's dead."
Maya's face was grim.
"Then someone dead has been logging into Aurora for twenty-six years."
