Chapter 9 - The Ride

Titan spent three weeks away from cameras.

Independent veterinary evaluation.

Pain assessment.

Behavioral work.

No challenge saddle.

No livestream.

No cheering crowd.

Caleb participated only under supervision because his old conviction still technically restricted professional horse work until the court addressed it.

He hated that.

He followed the rule anyway.

June came every afternoon after school.

She did not ride Titan.

She brushed him.

Walked beside him.

Read homework on an overturned bucket while he ate hay.

Robert watched from a distance.

The million-dollar sign remained dark in storage.

Then Lena Park gave written clearance for a controlled walk under conditions she would approve for any young rider with appropriate experience.

Helmet.

Safety vest.

Enclosed round pen.

Lead handler.

No spectators except June's parents, veterinarian, Robert, and two independent witnesses.

Emily still said no.

For four hours.

Then June asked one question.

"Mom, if Titan is safe, are you saying no because it's dangerous or because people laughed at me?"

Emily stared at her daughter.

"That is manipulative."

"Is it working?"

Caleb turned away to hide a smile.

Emily finally agreed.

"One walk. If Lena says stop, you stop. If Dad says stop, you stop. If Titan feels wrong, you get off."

June nodded.

"Yes."

Robert stood outside the pen holding the written challenge acknowledgment.

He had changed nothing.

One million dollars.

No publicity condition.

No release.

No silence clause.

June put her boot in the stirrup.

Titan did not move.

Caleb held the lead.

June settled into the saddle.

Titan's ears turned back toward her.

She whispered something.

Robert could not hear.

Caleb did.

His face softened.

"Walk on."

Titan stepped forward.

One circle.

Then another.

June's hands stayed low.

No pulling.

No kicking.

At the far side she said:

"Bluebird."

Titan stopped.

Then lowered his head.

June leaned forward and hugged his neck.

Emily cried.

Caleb cried harder.

Robert signed the completion certificate.

June slid down.

She walked directly to him.

"I won."

"Yes."

"All of it?"

"All of it."

Emily immediately said, "She is not carrying a million-dollar check home."

Robert almost laughed.

"No. Her attorney will hate me if I try."

A court-approved custodial trust would receive the prize for June's benefit.

Education.

Housing.

Future needs.

Not compensation for Caleb.

Not a settlement.

The prize.

June looked disappointed.

"Can I buy boots?"

Emily said, "Probably."

"Good boots?"

Caleb laughed.

"Now she cares about money."

Robert smiled.

Then June became serious.

"What happens to Titan?"

Robert looked at Caleb.

"That's the next decision."

Caleb shook his head.

"Not mine."

June frowned.

"Why?"

"Because loving a horse doesn't mean owning him."

Robert felt the sentence land exactly where it needed to.
