Chapter 6 - Robert's Card

Robert stared at the invoice.
$1,840.
Equine performance stimulation equipment.
Grant Hayes, requester.
Robert Hayes, cardholder.
Approval code automated through the ranch expense system.
Robert remembered none of it.
That did not make the charge less real.
"I gave Grant a corporate card when he became operations manager," Robert said.
Caleb looked at him.
"He was twenty-five."
"Yes."
"And you never asked what 'performance stimulation equipment' meant?"
Robert wanted to say there were thousands of expenses.
Feed.
Veterinary supplies.
Fencing.
Equipment.
Travel.
That was true.
It was also exactly the answer Caleb expected.
"No," Robert said. "I didn't ask."
June sat on a tack trunk eating a sandwich Emily had forced into her hands.
She listened without looking like she listened.
Caleb noticed.
"June. Outside with Mom."
"I'm eating."
"You can eat outside."
She frowned.
Then obeyed.
Once she left, Caleb said, "Don't let her grow up thinking this is a story where the rich man learns a lesson and everybody gets a check."
Robert looked at him.
"I won't."
"You don't know that yet."
Fair.
The forensic review of the ranch system began that evening.
Grant had ordered five similar devices over six years.
Two were listed as destroyed.
One was found in the challenge inventory.
Two were missing.
More troubling was the video archive.
The original Barn Three camera file had been exported twice on the night of Mason's accident.
Once to the security office.
Once to Grant's personal laptop.
The security copy later contained only forty-three seconds.
Grant's laptop had been replaced after what the ranch IT log called a beverage incident.
Caleb laughed when he heard.
"Coffee destroyed evidence. Convenient."
Robert did not defend his son.
He had run out of convenient explanations.
The next morning, a reporter asked Robert whether he had known the million-dollar challenge was rigged.
He answered on camera.
"No. But ignorance does not make the event fair. We sold tickets and sponsorships around a contest where the horse appears to have been deliberately provoked. All upcoming events are canceled. Records are being preserved."
"Are you blaming your son?"
"I'm not naming responsibility before investigators do."
"Do you still believe Caleb Mercer abused Titan?"
Robert looked into the camera.
"No."
The word spread faster than any challenge video.
Caleb watched from Emily's phone.
He did not smile.
That afternoon June asked Robert one question.
"Did my dad hear you?"
"Yes."
"Good."
Then she walked away.
No gratitude.
No dramatic hug.
Good.
Later, Grant called Robert from his attorney's office.
"Dad, I need you to listen before you destroy this family."
Robert almost hung up.
Then remembered how much damage came from refusing to listen to the wrong person.
"I'm listening."
Grant breathed out.
"The shock device six years ago was mine."
Robert closed his eyes.
"But Caleb didn't go to prison because I planted it."
Robert opened his eyes.
"What does that mean?"
Grant said, "Ask Caleb what he took from the ranch the week before the accident."
