Chapter 12 - The Million Dollars
June did not become a millionaire in the way social media imagined.
She did not buy a mansion.
Emily did not quit working the next morning.
Caleb did not open a luxury horse ranch.
The prize went into a court-supervised trust.
June's lawyer negotiated reasonable access for education, health, housing stability, and approved enrichment.
The first purchase was boots.
One hundred eighty-nine dollars.
Emily complained for twenty minutes.
June wore them to bed the first night.
The second approved expense was a used laptop for school.
The third was not for June.
She asked whether the trust could pay Caleb's legal bills.
Her lawyer said no.
"Why?"
"Because the money is yours."
"But Dad needs it."
"Your father has separate claims."
June frowned.
"That's dumb."
Caleb smiled.
"No. That's somebody finally refusing to make you pay for my problem."
June thought about that.
Then nodded.
Caleb's civil case against the ranch and state actors followed its own process.
Robert's lawyers advised settlement.
Robert agreed to mediate.
Caleb rejected the first offer.
Not because it was too low.
Because the confidentiality clause was too broad.
"No."
The mediator looked at him.
"It's standard."
"Then standard can change."
Robert's attorney looked at Robert.
Robert said, "Remove it."
Caleb looked surprised.
"That easy?"
Robert answered, "It should have been easier six years ago."
They settled without requiring Caleb to stay silent about the case.
The amount remained partly private by Caleb's choice, not Robert's condition.
Caleb used some money to move Emily and June into a safer rental near Mesa Dawn.
Not a mansion.
Two bedrooms.
Small yard.
June painted one wall blue.
She visited Titan twice a week.
At first she expected him to run to her every time.
Sometimes he did not.
That disappointed her.
Lena said, "He's a horse, not a gratitude machine."
June frowned.
"I know."
"Do you?"
"I'm learning."
Robert heard about that and smiled.
Hayes Crown Ranch changed too.
No performance challenge program.
No private devices.
Independent tack inspections at events.
Anonymous employee reporting outside ranch management.
Robert hated how boring reform sounded compared with a million-dollar sign.
Boring was probably healthy.
Then a streaming company offered Robert five million dollars for a documentary series:
THE GIRL WHO TAMED TITAN.
Robert called Emily.
She said no before he finished the sentence.
"I wasn't asking you to agree."
"Good."
"I was asking whether June wants to hear the offer."
Emily considered.
Then June got on the phone.
"Do I get five million?"
Robert laughed.
"No."
"Then no."
The documentary died in eleven seconds.
