Chapter 7 - What Caleb Took

Caleb did not deny taking it.

"Forty-eight thousand dollars."

Emily stared at him.

"Caleb."

June was outside with a sitter, deliberately kept away from the adult conversation.

Robert, Caleb, Emily, and Miriam Shaw - Caleb's attorney - sat in the ranch office.

Caleb rubbed his face.

"Not cash. Sale deposit."

Titan had been scheduled for a private performance evaluation before a syndicate purchase.

The buyer wired a refundable forty-eight-thousand-dollar deposit.

Caleb moved it from the ranch operating account into an escrow account controlled by the buyer's attorney.

"Why?" Robert asked.

"Because Grant was going to shock Titan during the demo."

"Why not tell me?"

Caleb laughed.

"I did."

Robert stopped.

"When?"

"Three times."

Caleb pulled old email printouts from his attorney's file.

Subject lines:

Concerns regarding Grant/Titan training.

Immediate safety issue - demo equipment.

Please call before sale presentation.

All sent to Robert.

All forwarded by Robert's assistant to Grant for response.

Grant replied each time that Caleb was resistant to modern training methods.

Robert had accepted the response.

Again.

"So you moved the deposit."

"I wanted the buyer to pause the sale until Titan was examined independently."

"That was not your money."

"No."

"It looked like theft."

"Yes."

Miriam spoke.

"Caleb pleaded not guilty to theft as well as animal cruelty. The deposit was located intact in escrow. The theft charge was dismissed before trial."

Robert remembered that.

He had still told people Caleb tried to steal from the ranch.

A dismissed charge became a story because the story was useful.

Caleb looked at Emily.

"I should have told you the whole thing."

She was angry now.

"You let me spend six years thinking every allegation was invented."

"The cruelty was invented."

"That's not what I said."

Caleb lowered his head.

June's father was not going to become perfect just because Grant was worse.

Robert found that strangely important.

Caleb continued.

"I thought if people heard I moved the deposit, they'd stop listening before I explained why."

Emily said, "So you did exactly what everybody else did. You edited your own story."

Silence.

Caleb nodded.

"Yeah."

Robert looked at the emails.

The warning had reached him.

He had delegated it back to the person being accused.

"I should have called you."

Caleb looked at him.

"Yes."

No absolution.

Good.

Then Miriam's phone rang.

The forensic lab had authenticated the memory card.

Original metadata intact.

No evidence of editing.

The video showing Grant planting the shock device was genuine.

Caleb's petition to vacate the conviction would now include new evidence and the ranch's cooperation.

Emily covered her face.

Caleb stared at the desk.

Robert waited for relief.

Caleb looked almost angry.

"I already served it."

Miriam nodded.

"I know."

"They can clear paper."

"Yes."

"They can't clear six years."

"No."

That night Grant disappeared.

Not from the country.

From the ranch.

And Titan disappeared with him.
