Chapter 3 - The Four Minutes Robert Never Saw

They played the video on the million-dollar screen.
Robert almost refused.
Then he looked at June.
Seven years old.
Standing beside the horse Robert had turned into a public monster.
"Play it."
Emily handed the memory card to the event technician.
The date appeared on screen.
Six years earlier.
Barn Three.
9:18 p.m.
Caleb Mercer walked Titan in a circle.
The stallion was four.
Muscular.
Alert.
Calm.
Caleb stopped.
Three-note whistle.
"Bluebird."
Titan lowered his head.
June squeezed Emily's hand.
Robert remembered that night.
Grant had been twenty-five.
He was scheduled to ride Titan the next morning for a private sale presentation.
The horse was expected to bring more than eight million dollars.
In the video, Grant entered the barn.
He carried a saddle.
Caleb immediately shook his head.
There was no sound, but their argument was obvious.
Grant shoved the saddle toward him.
Caleb pulled up the pad.
A wire fell free.
Robert stopped breathing.
Same design.
Same contacts.
Grant stepped toward the screen.
"Turn it off."
Robert did not look at him.
"Nobody touches anything."
On screen, Caleb ripped the device from the saddle.
Grant grabbed him.
They fought.
A ranch hand named Mason Pike entered from the aisle.
Titan reared at the shouting.
Mason reached for the horse.
Grant lifted something in his hand.
The remote.
Caleb saw it.
He lunged.
The screen flashed as Titan exploded sideways.
Mason hit the stall divider.
The horse kicked through a gate.
Caleb dove toward Mason.
Grant disappeared out of frame.
Then Caleb looked directly at the security camera.
He pointed after Grant.
The video continued.
That was the part Robert had never seen.
Caleb carried the injured Mason away from the horse.
Then Grant returned.
He was alone.
He picked up the shock device with a towel.
Walked to Caleb's open tack locker.
And put it inside.
The arena exploded.
Grant turned toward Robert.
"Dad."
Robert could not feel his hands.
The trial video had begun after that.
Police arriving.
The device in Caleb's locker.
Grant crying.
Caleb screaming that someone had edited the footage.
Robert remembered sitting with prosecutors.
Remembered saying Caleb had become obsessed with controlling Titan.
Remembered telling the jury that Grant would never hurt a horse for a sale.
He had not merely failed to ask.
He had testified.
Grant stepped backward.
"That video is fake."
Emily looked at him.
"You said that before anyone authenticated it."
Grant's face changed.
Then June spoke.
"Daddy said you'd say that."
Grant stared at her.
Robert did too.
June reached into the waistband of her jeans and removed a folded prison envelope.
"He wrote me what to do if I ever got here."
Emily's eyes widened.
"June, I told you not to bring that."
June opened the letter.
Her voice shook as she read.
"If Titan still answers to Bluebird, do not let anyone call him dangerous before they check the saddle. If the same device is there, ask Robert Hayes why his son needed the horse to fail."
Robert looked at Grant.
"Why?"
Grant said nothing.
Then Travis shouted from outside the arena.
"Because nobody was ever supposed to win the million!"
