Chapter 4 - The Challenge Was Never Meant to Be Won

Travis had been employed by Hayes Crown Ranch for eleven months.

He managed event tack, livestream equipment, and the challenge saddle.

Once his lawyer arrived, he started talking.

Not because he suddenly developed a conscience.

Because he saw Grant's face on a forty-foot screen planting evidence six years earlier.

The million-dollar challenge had made almost four million dollars in ticket sales, streaming sponsorships, licensing, and branded merchandise over eighteen months.

Robert knew that.

What he did not know was that Grant had also arranged private betting pools through outside promoters.

Titan could not simply remain difficult.

He had to remain impossible.

Travis's job was to fit the modified girth and activate it only after a rider settled into the saddle.

Low current.

Enough to hurt.

Enough to make Titan associate weight on his back with pain.

"How many times?" Robert asked.

Travis looked at the dirt.

"Eight events."

Robert's vision blurred.

Eight.

Eight times he had stood in arenas telling crowds the horse was wild.

Eight times Titan had been punished for reacting exactly as a horse reacts to pain.

Grant's attorney pulled him away before Robert could ask more.

Robert did not stop them.

Police were already coming.

So were state animal-welfare officers.

The crowd remained because nobody wanted to leave the collapse of a legend.

Robert walked back to June.

Emily stood between them.

Good.

"The challenge is canceled."

June frowned.

"No."

Emily looked at her daughter.

"June."

"Mom, he said whoever."

Robert almost smiled despite everything.

"I'm not putting a seven-year-old on him in front of this crowd."

June looked at Titan.

"Then you admit the challenge was fake."

Robert looked toward the screen.

One million dollars.

His own words.

His own spectacle.

Then Dr. Lena Park approached.

"If the device is removed and Titan passes a physical exam, a child rider under controlled lead is not the same as this stunt. But not today. He needs evaluation."

June nodded immediately.

"Okay."

Robert noticed that.

She did not want the spectacle more than the horse.

"If he is safe," June said, "I ride him later."

Emily opened her mouth.

June grabbed her hand.

"With a helmet. With Dad there. At a walk."

Emily stared.

"You planned that sentence."

"A little."

Robert crouched so he was closer to June's height.

"If Titan is medically cleared, and your parents consent, and the ride meets independent safety rules, the offer stands."

The crowd reacted.

June shook her head.

"Write it down."

Robert blinked.

Emily covered a smile.

"She's Caleb's daughter."

Robert's smile disappeared.

He deserved that too.

He had his attorney draft a short written acknowledgment before anyone left the arena.

No waiver of claims.

No publicity release.

No condition except safe completion of the challenge under independently approved rules.

One million dollars payable for June's benefit through a court-approved custodial structure if she won.

June watched Robert sign.

Then signed her own name in large careful letters beneath her mother's signature.

When she finished, someone near the arena gate shouted.

The crowd turned.

A man stood outside the fence.

Thin.

Sun-darkened face.

Work boots.

Gray feed-store shirt.

June dropped the pen.

"Daddy."

Caleb Mercer had arrived.

He looked past his daughter.

Past Titan.

Straight at Robert Hayes.

"You finally watched the whole thing."
