Chapter 13 - Caleb and Grant

Caleb agreed to meet Grant once.
Not alone.
A mediator sat between them.
No cameras.
Robert was not in the room.
Grant spoke first.
"I'm sorry."
Caleb stared.
"For what?"
Grant swallowed.
"The device."
"Which time?"
Grant flinched.
"The first time. The challenge. Planting it. The video."
"Better."
Grant's eyes filled.
"I didn't think you'd go to prison."
Caleb leaned back.
"What did you think would happen?"
"You'd get fired. Maybe probation."
"You testified."
"I know."
"You told the jury I bragged about breaking horses."
Grant covered his face.
"I know."
Caleb waited.
Then said, "I moved the buyer's deposit."
Grant looked up.
"What?"
"I was right about you and still did something I had no authority to do."
Grant stared.
Caleb continued.
"I'm not saying that makes us equal. It doesn't. I'm saying I don't need to lie about myself to tell the truth about you."
The mediator said nothing.
Grant whispered, "Do you forgive me?"
Caleb looked at him for a long time.
"No."
Grant nodded.
"Maybe later?"
"Don't build your sentence around what I might give you later."
Grant cried quietly.
Caleb stayed.
That was all.
Grant eventually pleaded guilty to a set of charges including evidence tampering, fraud tied to the challenge, and animal cruelty-related conduct.
Other counts were dismissed under the agreement.
He received prison time.
Not forever.
Long enough to make the consequences real.
Travis received a shorter sentence after cooperation.
The betting promoter faced financial crimes separately.
Robert attended Grant's sentencing.
June did not.
Neither did Caleb.
Emily asked Caleb whether he felt better afterward.
"No."
"Good."
He looked at her.
"Why does everyone say that?"
"Because prison was never going to give you six years back."
Caleb laughed softly.
"Fair."
At Mesa Dawn, Caleb's probationary training position became permanent.
He was not made director.
He did not become famous.
He cleaned stalls.
Worked difficult horses.
Taught younger staff to identify fear before calling it defiance.
June loved watching him.
One afternoon she asked, "When do I get to work here?"
"When child labor laws collapse."
"That's not a date."
"Good."
Titan lived in a pasture at the edge of the property.
Some days June rode him at a walk.
Some days she did not.
The first time Titan walked away from her while she held a halter, she looked offended.
Caleb laughed.
"He said no."
June sighed.
Then dropped the halter.
"Fine."
That moment made Caleb prouder than the million-dollar ride.
