The Day the Empire Crumbled / Chapter 4 / 28

Chapter 4: The Reckoning

The mansion was chaos.

Servants stood in clusters. Security guards blocked the main doors. Margaret was screaming at everyone who moved. Brenda was crying.

And Andrew was losing his mind.

I walked through the gate and onto the gravel driveway.

All eyes turned toward me.

"Mariana." Andrew's voice cracked with relief. "Thank God. I've been trying to call you—"

"Step away from the safe."

He blinked. "What?"

"Now."

Andrew hesitated.

I stared at him.

He stepped back.

Slowly. Reluctantly.

"I don't understand what's happening," he said. "The accounts are frozen. The bank won't release funds. The board—"

"The board is meeting with my lawyers."

"Your lawyers?"

"My lawyers, Andrew. The ones who wrote every contract you've been signed for the past four years."

His face went white.

"But I signed those contracts. I was the one—"

"You were the figurehead."

"The what?"

"The face. The show. The nice-looking man in the nice-looking suit who stands in front of the camera and takes credit for everything."

Margaret stepped forward.

"How dare you speak to my son that way?"

"I dare because your son doesn't own anything, Margaret."

"That's a lie."

"Is it?"

I pulled out my phone.

Unlocked it.

Held up a document.

"This is the agreement Andrew signed three years ago. The one that transferred all operational authority to my name."

Margaret stared at the screen.

"I don't understand."

"The company, the accounts, the investments—it's all mine. It was always mine. Andrew was just an employee."

"That's impossible."

"Is it?"

Brenda's eyes darted back and forth.

She looked like a trapped animal.

"Andrew," she whispered. "What is she talking about?"

Andrew didn't answer.

"Brenda," I said, "do you know what I am?"

She shook her head.

"I'm a ghost," I said. "I was invisible to this family for four years. They ate my food. They lived in my house. They spent my money. But they never saw me."

"That doesn't make any sense," Brenda said.

"Take a look at the necklace in your purse."

She froze.

"It's not there," she said quickly.

"Check again."

Brenda's hand drifted toward her bag.

"Brenda." Andrew's voice was sharp. "Don't."

She pulled out the emerald necklace.

The room went silent.

"Where did you get that?" Margaret whispered.

"I don't—"

"She stole it," I said calmly. "She put it in her purse. Then Margaret pretended it was missing. And Andrew blamed me."

"That's not what happened—" Brenda started.

"It is exactly what happened. And the cameras caught everything."

Margaret went pale.

"Those cameras were private."

"They were. And now they're mine."

I turned to Andrew.

"You've spent four years humiliating me. Four years letting your mother and your mistress attack me. Four years treating me like I was beneath you."

Andrew's jaw clenched.

"But you were wrong," I said. "I was never beneath you. I was always above you. You just couldn't see it."

"Mariana—"

"I'm divorcing you, Andrew. And I'm taking everything."

"You can't—"

"I can. And I will."

I walked past him.

Into the mansion.

The servants parted like the Red Sea.

I stopped in the center of the foyer.

The same foyer where Andrew had slapped me. Where Brenda had smiled. Where Margaret had called me "that girl."

"This house," I said, "is mine. It was built with my money. It's furnished with my investments. Every painting. Every sculpture. Every piece of furniture—all of it paid for by me."

"That's not—"

"Get out," I said.

Margaret froze.

"Excuse me?"

"All of you. Get out of my house."

"You can't be serious—"

"I'm completely serious. I want every one of you out. Immediately."

Brenda stepped forward. "Andrew, she's lost her mind."

"Funny," I said. "You keep saying that. But it seems like I'm the only one making sense."

Andrew walked up to me.

Close enough to touch.

"Mariana, I know I made mistakes—"

"Mistakes?"

"But I still love you. We can work this out. I can change. I can be better."

"Like you were better with Brenda?"

Andrew flinched.

"Brenda doesn't matter. She's nothing."

"She was everything to you ten minutes ago."

"She's a mistake. A huge mistake. I realize that now."

Brenda's face crumpled.

"Andrew?"

"Just be quiet, okay? I'm trying to fix this."

"You're trying to save your money," I said. "There's a difference."

"Mariana—"

"You put your hands on me in front of your mistress and told me to kneel. And you expect me to forgive you?"

"I was angry—"

"You were cruel. There's a difference."

Andrew opened his mouth.

Closed it.

"I don't have anything to say to you," I said. "Not anymore. Not ever."

I turned to the security team.

"Escort them out."

Brenda shrieked.

Margaret screamed.

Andrew reached for me.

One of the guards grabbed his arm.

"Don't touch her."

"This is insane!" Andrew shouted. "You can't do this!"

"I already did it."

"I'll sue you—"

"You can try."

"I'll fight you—"

"Go ahead."

Andrew's voice cracked.

"I built this—"

"I built this," I said. "You just stood there and looked pretty."

The room went quiet.

Andrew looked at me.

Really looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw it.

Real fear.

"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I'm so sorry. Please. Just give me one more chance."

"You hit me," I said. "In front of everyone. You hit me, Andrew."

"I know. I know. I'm disgusting. I'm a monster. But I can change. I can fix this. Just please—"

"Hit her again."

Brenda's voice came from behind me.

I spun around.

"What?"

"I said hit her again," Brenda repeated. "That's what she deserves."

"Brenda—" Andrew started.

"No, Andrew. She's destroying you. She's destroying everyone. She's a cold, calculating little bitch who spent years lying to all of us. And now she's pretending to be the victim."

I stepped closer to her.

"Say that again."

Brenda's chin lifted. "You're pathetic."

I smiled.

"Your father is going to lose his entire fortune."

Brenda went still.

"Your father, Anthony Russo, owns a small investment firm. It's heavily leveraged against Escalante Holdings."

"You're lying—"

"You did a lot of research on me, Brenda. But you forgot to research the woman who owns everything."

Her face went white.

"Please—"

"Why? Now you want me to be nice? Now you want me to forgive? You slept with my husband. You wore my clothes. You mocked me in front of everyone. And now you want mercy?"

"I didn't know—"

"Of course you knew. You just didn't care."

Brenda fell silent.

I turned to Andrew.

"You have twenty-four hours. Then my lawyers will be in touch."

"Mariana—"

"Don't."

I walked out of the mansion.

Behind me, Brenda started crying.

Andrew started screaming.

May you like

Margaret started praying.

And I walked away.
