Chapter 25: The Confession Part 2

We were sitting on a park bench.

The sun was setting.

Alex looked at me.

"Mariana, can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Are you scared?"

"Of what?"

"Of this. Of us."

I thought about it.

"Yeah. I am."

"Why?"

"Because I've been burned before."

"I'm not Andrew."

"I know. But the fear—it doesn't go away. It just sits there. Waiting."

Alex reached for my hand.

"I'm not going to hurt you."

"You can't promise that."

"No. But I can promise to try."

I looked at him.

He wasn't perfect.

His suit was rumpled. His hair was messy. He said awkward things.

But he was real.

And that was enough.

"Okay," I said.

"Okay?"

"Okay. Let's try."

May you like

He smiled.

And I smiled back.
