Chapter 6 - THE COPY THAT SURVIVED

Elise’s copy was not at the bank.

It was at a shelter that had closed twelve years ago.

Or at least, that was Florence’s guess.

The building sat on the edge of town behind a boarded laundromat and a pawn shop with bars over the windows. The old brass plaque had been removed, but the rectangular shadow it left was still visible beside the door.

I had been there once as a child.

I remembered coloring books.

Coffee.

Women who spoke quietly.

I had not understood why.

A retired director named Ruth Mercer met me with a ring of keys and zero patience.

“You’re James’s boy.”

“I’m forty-one.”

“You’re still James’s boy.”

Fair enough.

Inside, dust floated through the afternoon light.

Ruth led me to a back records room.

“Elise hid copies because she thought someone in your father’s office was reading her files.”

“Kessler?”

“She never said.”

“Did she trust my father?”

Ruth gave me a complicated look.

“Eventually.”

That word mattered.

We searched for two hours.

Nothing.

I was kneeling beside a broken filing cabinet when Ruth suddenly said, “That vent is new.”

It was not new.

It was twenty years old.

But it was newer than the wall.

I unscrewed it with a pocketknife.

Behind the vent sat a plastic document pouch.

My hands went cold.

Inside was a photocopied ledger.

Blue cover.

Elise’s handwriting.

Names.

Dates.

Transfer numbers.

And one repeated set of initials.

M.K.

Martin Kessler.

Ruth leaned over my shoulder.

“Keep going.”

Near the back, Elise had written a personal note.

“If anything happens to me, Victoria must never believe this money belongs to us. It doesn’t. I only tracked it. Martin keeps telling her the Ashfords stole our future. He is lying to her.”

I closed my eyes.

Victoria had spent years believing the exact lie her mother had tried to prevent.

Then I read the final line.

“James says he will confront Martin Friday.”

The date beside it was nine years ago.

The day before my father died.
