Chapter 15 - MY MOTHER’S SIGNATURE

The signature was good.

Too good.

A handwriting examiner initially called it “highly consistent” with Florence’s authentic signature.

Then he found the problem.

The ink was fresh.

The signature was not.

It had been lifted from a scanned medical directive and digitally placed on the trust document before printing.

Martin’s office had a copy of that directive.

So did our family estate file.

The court froze the disputed document and left Florence’s original trust intact.

We won the hearing.

Nobody celebrated.

Florence was weaker by the hour.

That evening, she asked everyone to leave except me.

“Close the door.”

I did.

She held out her hand.

I gave her Dad’s ring.

She turned it slowly between her fingers.

“You should know something ugly about your father.”

I sank into the chair.

“I am running out of emotional storage, Mom.”

She smiled faintly.

“He knew Martin was careless with Elise. He suspected him months before the missing money was confirmed.”

“Okay.”

“He did not act quickly enough.”

“Why?”

“Business.”

One word.

There it was.

My father had worried about scandal. Investors. Board members. Headlines.

He delayed confronting Martin while he tried to verify the transfers quietly.

During that delay, Elise’s reputation collapsed.

She lost work.

She drank more.

She died in a single-car crash after leaving a bar.

No conspiracy.

Just a chain of human failures.

“Your father carried that guilt,” Florence said. “So do I.”

I looked at the ring.

For days I had wanted Dad to be the dead hero who saw everything clearly.

He had not been.

He had been decent and frightened and late.

Like most people.

Florence touched my hand.

“Do not make him into a saint just because he is gone.”

I nodded.

She closed her eyes.

Then she said, “And do not make Victoria into a monster just because she hurt us.”

I pulled my hand away.

“She tried to rob you.”

“Yes.”

“She used me.”

“Yes.”

“You want me to forgive her?”

Florence opened her eyes.

“No.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“I want you to tell the truth accurately.”
