Chapter 16 - VICTORIA TELLS THE PART THAT MAKES HER LOOK WORSE

Victoria asked to speak to me the next morning.
I almost refused.
Then I remembered my mother’s words.
Tell the truth accurately.
So I listened.
Victoria did not make herself look better.
That surprised me.
She admitted she had copied my passwords during the first year we dated.
She had photographed tax documents in my home office.
She had given Martin the name of my mother’s banker.
She had even lied about running into Florence “by chance” at a charity lunch two years earlier.
She had gone there to ask questions about the trust.
“Did you ever stop?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three months before our wedding.”
“Convenient.”
“I know.”
“Stop saying that.”
She nodded.
Then she told me why she stopped.
Not because she discovered Martin was lying.
Not because she suddenly became moral.
Because one night I got food poisoning.
That was it.
I had spent six miserable hours on the bathroom floor, sweating and swearing I was dying. Victoria had sat beside me holding a trash can and feeding me ice chips.
“I remember thinking, this idiot trusts me completely.”
Despite everything, I said, “I was very sick.”
“You were dramatic.”
“I had a fever.”
“You had 99.4.”
For one second, we were married again.
Then it disappeared.
She looked down.
“I realized I could not keep taking things from you and call it justice.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted to keep you.”
There it was.
The selfish answer.
The honest one.
“And years later, when Martin told you my mother was stealing your inheritance?”
“I wanted to believe him.”
“Why?”
“Because if he was lying, then I had built half my life around a lie.”
She took a breath.
“So I chose the version that hurt less.”
It had hurt Florence more.
That was the problem with comfortable lies.
They rarely stayed contained.
Before she left, Victoria slid a folded paper toward me.
It was a written statement for the prosecutor.
At the bottom she had added one line by hand.
“I will testify even if it increases my own sentence.”
