Chapter 12 - THE MONEY NEVER BELONGED TO VICTORIA

The next two days moved fast.

Too fast for grief.

Too fast for sleep.

Police seized records from Martin’s office. The district attorney opened a financial crimes investigation. The bank froze accounts tied to the old shell companies.

And Martin Kessler disappeared.

Not internationally.

Not dramatically.

He simply stopped answering his phone and failed to arrive at work.

His car was found at the airport.

No ticket had been purchased under his name.

Detective Ruiz called it “annoying.”

I called it terrifying.

The copied ledger gave investigators a map.

But it also gave Victoria something she had never had.

Her mother’s actual words.

We sat in a conference room with a forensic accountant as he explained the missing $4.8 million.

It had never belonged to Elise.

She had not inherited it.

She had not earned it.

She had discovered it.

Martin had used her login credentials and access codes to route charitable money into companies he controlled.

When Elise caught him, he convinced her that James Ashford had ordered the transfers and that the money was being hidden from shelter residents.

Then he told young Victoria a different lie.

He told her the Ashfords had stolen a private settlement intended for Elise.

One lie for the mother.

Another for the daughter.

Both useful.

Victoria stared at the spreadsheet.

“So I tried to steal money that was never mine.”

The accountant looked uncomfortable.

“No one here is making a criminal determination.”

“I am.”

She stood and walked out.

I found her near the vending machines.

She was crying without sound.

I wanted to put a hand on her shoulder.

I did not.

That was one of the hardest things I had done all week.

“I would have signed it over,” she said.

“What?”

“If Florence had signed, I would have taken everything.”

I said nothing.

“I kept telling myself it was justice.”

She wiped her face angrily.

“It wasn’t.”

“No.”

She nodded.

Then her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered before I could stop her.

Martin’s voice came through on speaker.

“Victoria,” he said calmly. “You have something that belongs to me.”
