Chapter 20 - WHAT MY PARENTS BUILT AFTER THEY FAILED

The funeral was small because Florence had threatened to haunt me if I turned it into “a corporate networking event with flowers.”

I believed her.

Victoria did not attend.

She sent no flowers.

No card.

For once, she understood absence could be a form of respect.

A week later, I went to the shelter named Florence House.

I had donated to it for years without ever walking through the front door.

That embarrassed me.

The director, Nia Brooks, showed me the family rooms, legal clinic, children’s play area, and a small office where women could apply for jobs without giving an abuser access to their location.

“This is where most of your mother’s trust will go,” Nia said.

I nodded.

On one wall hung photographs of former volunteers.

Florence.

James.

And Elise Vale.

I stopped.

Nia followed my eyes.

“Elise helped design our emergency bookkeeping system. We still use parts of it.”

I felt something inside me shift.

For years, Elise had existed in my head as a tragedy attached to my family.

Here she was a person who had built something.

Not just a victim.

Not just evidence.

A woman.

Nia handed me an old envelope found in the shelter archives after police began asking questions.

It was addressed to Florence.

Inside was a note from Elise.

“If Victoria ever learns the truth, please do not tell her I was perfect. I was angry. I lied to her when I was ashamed. I let Martin become important because he made my fear feel like certainty.”

The final line stopped me.

“Tell her she is allowed to become someone I did not teach her to be.”

I sat down.

Nia gave me privacy.

That afternoon I called Victoria’s attorney.

“Tell her I found something from Elise.”

“Do you want to speak to her?”

I looked at my mother’s photograph on the wall.

“Not yet.”

Then the attorney said, “You may want to reconsider. The prosecutor offered her a plea this morning.”
