Chapter 1 - THE FIRST SENTENCE

“Edward, if a woman named Victoria Vale ever comes into your life, understand this first: she did not find you by accident.”
I read the sentence twice.
Then a third time.
My mother was still on the stretcher near the front doors, wrapped in a gray paramedic blanket. One side of her silver hair had come loose from its pins. Her face looked smaller than it had that morning.
But all I could see was the page shaking between my fingers.
“Mom.”
Florence closed her eyes.
“Mom, what is this?”
One of the paramedics glanced toward us, then politely turned away.
My father had been dead for nine years.
I had met Victoria six years ago.
According to the date at the top of the letter, Dad had written this almost three years before that.
My mouth went dry.
I kept reading.
“Victoria Vale is the daughter of Elise Vale. She has been asking questions about our family, about the trust, and about you. She may believe we owe her something. I am not yet certain who has put that belief in her head.”
I stopped.
Vale.
Victoria had told me her maiden name was Vale, but she had made it sound like an ordinary detail. Her mother was dead. Her father had “never really been around.” That was all I knew.
Six years of marriage, and that was all I knew.
I looked at Florence.
“You knew her name.”
She swallowed.
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing?”
Her eyes filled, but she did not answer quickly enough.
That hurt more than if she had lied.
I lowered my voice. “You watched me marry her.”
“I watched you love her.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No.” Florence’s voice cracked. “It isn’t.”
The paramedic told us they needed to leave.
I folded the letter with hands that did not feel like mine.
Then I noticed one more line near the bottom of the first page.
“If anything happens to me before I can finish this, the ring will tell Edward where to look.”
I stared at the gold ring in my palm.
My father had worn it every day of my childhood.
I had assumed it was sentimental.
It wasn’t.
There was a tiny groove along the inside edge I had never noticed before.
And when I pressed my thumbnail against it, part of the ring moved.
