Chapter 4 - BOX 214

The bank manager knew my father’s name.

That did not make me feel better.

It made me wonder how many pieces of his life had continued moving without me.

Box 214 required two things: the small brass key hidden inside a second compartment in the ring, and proof that I was James Ashford’s son.

Apparently, Dad had planned for the possibility that Florence would not be the one opening it.

I signed three forms.

The manager led me into a private room.

Then she left me alone with the box.

Inside were no diamonds.

No stacks of cash.

No dramatic blackmail photographs.

Just paper.

A lot of it.

Old shelter budgets. Copies of canceled checks. A yellow legal pad in my father’s handwriting. A photograph of a young woman I recognized only because she had Victoria’s eyes.

Elise Vale.

Beside her stood my mother.

Florence looked thirty years younger and exhausted.

Elise looked frightened.

On the back, Dad had written:

“She is telling the truth about the missing money. Kessler says otherwise.”

I sat down hard.

Under the photograph was a sealed envelope marked EDWARD.

I opened it.

The first page was another letter from Dad.

This one was unfinished.

“Martin insists Elise stole from the shelter accounts. The numbers do not support him. I believe someone used her access to make her the fall guy.”

My heart began pounding.

There were photocopies of wire transfers totaling $4.8 million over eight years.

Each transfer moved money from the family charitable trust into consulting firms.

The companies had bland names.

North Creek Advisory.

Bellweather Services.

Alder Management.

Then I saw the signatures authorizing them.

One belonged to my father.

One belonged to Florence.

And one belonged to Martin Kessler.

I stared at my mother’s signature until the ink blurred.

Maybe it was forged.

I wanted it to be forged.

Then I found a note in Dad’s handwriting.

“Florence signed at my request. She did not know.”

Relief came too fast.

Then I turned the page.

“After Elise died, Florence found the blue ledger. She destroyed it before I could stop her.”

My relief disappeared.

My phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

YOU OPENED THE BOX.

A second message arrived before I could breathe.

NOW ASK YOUR MOTHER WHAT SHE WAS AFRAID YOU WOULD FIND.
