Chapter 4 - The Best Man's Arrival

The cold steel of Marcus’s Glock was five feet from my face.

The man had worked security on my family’s estate for four years. I had paid for his mother’s heart surgery two Christmases ago.

“Marcus?” I said, staring at the muzzle. “You too?”

Marcus didn’t look me in the eye. “Mr. Carter cleared my mortgage, sir. Two hundred and forty thousand dollars. A man’s got to take care of his own family first.”

Carter casually stepped around the puddle of broken glass, walking over to the bottom of the staircase.

“You see, Dan, you were always Dad’s golden boy. The brilliant surgeon who built private outpatient clinics while I ran the family logistics grind. But you don’t understand how the world works outside your sterile operating rooms. Money buys loyalty. Cash talks. Principles are just things rich people talk about when their bills are already paid.”

Victoria wiped her tears away with the back of her hand. All the trembling fear was gone now. She smiled, brushing her hair back into place. “I told you, Daniel. You should have just signed the joint management papers over Noah’s trust when I asked you last month. It would have been so much cleaner.”

“Where is Hendricks?” I asked, keeping my body between them and the upstairs hallway where Noah was locked in.

“Hendricks is outside by the front gate, securing the perimeter,” Carter said smoothly. “Nobody comes in. Nobody leaves. Now, here’s how tonight is going to go. You’re going to walk into your study, sit at your desk, and you’re going to write a handwritten note explaining that you can’t handle the grief anymore. That you’re stepping away to an inpatient facility in Switzerland for six months, and granting full guardianship of Noah to me.”

“And if I refuse?”

Carter’s smile faded. “If you refuse, Marcus puts a bullet through your shoulder, we say you attacked Victoria in an alcoholic rage, and we take Noah anyway while you bleed out on your way to county jail. Either way, Daniel, you lose.”

From the top of the stairs, a door creaked open.

Grace stepped out onto the landing.

She wasn't crying. She wasn't shaking. In her right hand, she was holding an old 12-gauge Remington shotgun—the hunting rifle my father used to keep locked in the gun cabinet behind the dining room bar.

Rack.

The heavy metallic sound of a shell being pumped into the chamber echoed through the vaulted foyer.

“Drop the gun, Marcus,” Grace said, her voice dead level, pointing the barrel straight at the guard’s head.

Marcus stiffened, his eyes darting upward. “Grace, put that down! You don’t know what you’re doing!”

“I know exactly what I’m doing,” Grace said, stepping down the stairs one wooden tread at a time. “I grew up in the Appalachian foothills, Marcus. I was shooting quail before you learned to tie your boots. Drop the weapon on the floor or I swear to God I’ll paint that wall with you.”

Carter took half a step back, his face darkening. “Grace, you’re an employee. I will wire five hundred thousand dollars into your offshore account right now. Just walk out the back.”

Grace looked at Carter with pure disgust.

“Your money is soaked in your brother’s blood, Carter. And you’re not taking Noah.”

Marcus slowly, agonizingly lowered his handgun and dropped it onto the Persian rug.

“Kick it over here, Dan,” Grace commanded.

I kicked the gun up the stairs toward her, then lunged forward, grabbing Carter by the throat and slamming him against the oak wainscoting. His head hit the wood with a dull thud.

“Get out of my house,” I growled into his ear, squeezing his trachea until his eyes bulged. “Both of you. Take Marcus and get out before I decide the shotgun is too merciful.”

Carter gasped for air, his hands clawing at my wrists. When I let him go, he collapsed onto his knees, coughing violently.

“This isn't over, Dan,” Carter wheezed, glaring up at me with sheer, venomous hatred. “You check Noah’s medicine cabinet lately? You think you’re taking him anywhere? Just look at what Victoria has been putting in his inhaler.”
