Chapter 10 - The Sister We Never Talked About

I sat paralyzed in the passenger seat, the gun slowly dropping into my lap.

My father had been a pillar of the community—a ruthless corporate titan who preached family honor, legacy, and duty until the day he died.

“Our father had a second family in Chicago for eight years before he moved your mother to this estate,” Grace said, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “When my mother got sick, he cut us off completely. Left us with fifty thousand dollars and a non-disclosure agreement threatened by his corporate lawyers.”

“I... I never knew,” I stammered. “Carter and I were kids. We had no idea.”

“Carter found out,” Grace said bitterly. “Carter discovered the old legal files in your father’s personal safe after the funeral. He reached out to Victoria three years ago. Victoria was angry. She grew up poor, watching you and Carter live in private school luxury while we clipped coupons to pay for our mother’s insulin. Carter weaponized that anger.”

“He promised her a cut of Noah’s trust,” I said, the pieces snapping together with terrifying clarity.

“He promised her five million dollars to infiltrate your life, push you into a mental breakdown, and testify against you in probate court,” Grace explained. “Victoria thought she was getting justice for our mother. She didn't realize Carter was using her as a disposable pawn.”

“Then why did you come to my house as a nanny?” I asked.

“Because Elena found me first,” Grace said.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small audio recorder, pressing play.

Elena’s voice filled the cabin of the Subaru:

“Grace, I know who you are. I hired a private investigator the moment Carter introduced Victoria to Daniel. I know Victoria is your sister. But I also know you tried to stop her from taking Carter’s money. I am begging you... I don't know how much time I have left. Carter is watching the house. If something happens to me, you have to protect Noah. You are the only person who can get close to Victoria without raising suspicion.”

The tape clicked off.

“Elena hired me under a false agency recommendation six months before she died,” Grace whispered. “She made me swear that I would play both sides until we had enough evidence to put Carter away for good. That’s why Victoria thinks I’m on her side. That’s why she called me just now.”

I looked at Grace—really looked at her. Beneath her dark hair and sharp jawline, I saw the ghost of my father’s eyes.

“Why didn't you tell me the night Victoria hit Noah?” I asked.

“Because Carter has Judge Hollister in his pocket,” Grace said grimly. “The emergency custody hearing isn't tomorrow at noon, Daniel. Victoria lied to you. The ex-parte hearing is at 8:00 AM this morning in County District Court. If Carter shows up with Marcus’s police statement and Frank’s doctored affidavit claiming you burned down the logistics depot tonight, Judge Hollister will sign Noah’s custody over to Carter permanently before breakfast.”

I looked at the dashboard clock.

It was 4:15 AM.

We had less than four hours before my brother legally stole my son forever.

“Then we don't run,” I said, cocking Marcus’s Glock and checking the spare magazine in my pocket. “We go to the courthouse. And we bring the truth with us.”
