Chapter 2 - The Face on the Laptop

Elena’s voice echoed off the wood-paneled walls of the study like a message broadcast from a tomb.

I gripped the edge of the desk so hard my knuckles turned white. On the screen, my late wife glanced nervously over her shoulder toward the window behind her before leaning closer to the camera.

“Carter is drowning in debt, Daniel,” Elena said, her breath shallow. “He gambled thirty million dollars from the family logistics firm on offshore shell investments, and it’s completely gone. The only liquidity left in the entire estate is Noah’s irrevocable trust. The trust your father set up before he died. Eighty million dollars that Carter cannot touch unless both you and I are gone, or unless Noah is placed under legal conservatorship.”

The screen flickered. A child's laugh drifted from somewhere in the background of the recording—Noah, playing out in the sun a year ago, when our lives were still intact.

“Victoria’s real name is Victoria Vance,” Elena continued, tears welling in her eyes. “She was Carter’s corporate paralegal in Chicago before he quietly moved her to a front company. Carter promised her ten percent of the trust payout if she helped him build a file against us. If anything happens to me, Daniel, look at Carter’s personal bank statements. Look at the maintenance records on the company sedan. He is desperate. He will not stop.”

The video cut to black.

Behind me, the door banged open. Victoria came barreling into the study, breaking free from Marcus's grip, her hair wild, mascara streaked down her cheeks.

“Daniel! Turn that damn thing off!” she screamed, lunging across the desk with both hands clawed, trying to snatch the laptop.

Marcus caught her by the waist and slammed her back against the doorframe. “Don’t move!”

I didn’t blink. I picked up the manila folder that had been sitting beneath the hard drive.

I opened it.

Inside was an official court summons, dated just two days ago, filed in the county probate division. It was an emergency petition for temporary emergency guardianship over Noah.

The petition claimed that I, Daniel Mercer, was suffering from acute, unmanaged PTSD and severe clinical depression following my wife's death, rendering me completely unfit and dangerous to care for a minor child.

The witness statement testifying to my alleged alcoholic rages and neglect was signed by Victoria Vance.

And the co-petitioner listed at the top of the legal filing—the man requesting immediate custody of my son and full administrative control over the eighty-million-dollar trust—was my younger brother, Carter.

“You filed this on Tuesday,” I said, my voice dropping so low it rattled in my chest. “You were sleeping in my bed, planning our wedding menu, while you filed paperwork to have my son ripped out of my arms.”

“You don’t understand the pressure Carter put on me!” Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking. “He threatened me! He said if I didn't help him, he’d pin the embezzled money on me! Daniel, please, you have to listen to me!”

“Where is Carter right now?” I demanded, stepping into her space until she flinched against the wall.

“I don’t know!” she sobbed. “He told me to stay here and keep Noah quiet until the hearing tomorrow morning!”

A loud, familiar laugh suddenly echoed from the foyer downstairs.

“Daniel! Hey, big brother!” Carter’s cheerful voice drifted up the grand staircase. “Your flight was supposed to land tomorrow night! What are we drinking to celebrate your last week of bachelorhood?”
