Chapter 15 - Poison in the Nursery

Those words turned the victory in my chest to ice.

The person who introduced Elena to me.

Ten years ago. A charity gala in Manhattan. I was a young surgical resident, exhausted, standing by the champagne fountain.

A woman had walked up to me with a warm, maternal smile, holding a glass of wine, and said: “Daniel, there is a brilliant young pediatric architect named Elena you simply have to meet.”

Eleanor Vance.

Arthur Mercer’s former executive secretary.

The woman who had run my father’s corporate empire for thirty years.

I didn't stay in the courthouse garage. I ran back upstairs to Courtroom 302 where federal agents were already documenting the scene.

Victoria was sitting in cuffs on the front bench, flanked by two female state marshals. Her designer dress was torn, her makeup ruined, her eyes staring blankly at the floor.

I walked straight up to her and leaned down until my face was inches from hers.

“Where is Eleanor?” I demanded.

Victoria slowly raised her head. A cold, bitter smile curled her lips.

“You finally figured it out, didn't you, Daniel? You thought Carter was smart enough to plan all of this? Carter is an arrogant, incompetent gambler. He couldn't plan a birthday party without losing ten thousand dollars.”

“Where is your mother?” I asked again, my voice shaking with restrained fury.

“She’s not in Chicago, Daniel,” Victoria whispered, her eyes glittering with dark satisfaction. “Where do you think she’s been living for the last eighteen months while you were busy operating on patients and crying over Elena?”

My phone rang.

It was an unlisted landline from my private medical clinic downtown.

I answered it immediately. “Mercer.”

“Dr. Daniel?” It was Sarah, my head nurse at the outpatient surgical wing. Her voice was panicked, breathless. “Doctor, an older woman arrived ten minutes ago claiming she was Noah’s grandmother. She had certified emergency power of attorney forms with Judge Hollister’s seal. She demanded access to your private pharmacy locker to retrieve Noah’s pediatric backup medication.”

“Did you let her into the pharmacy?” I shouted, my heart hammering against my ribs.

“No! Our systems were flagged with the police alert,” Sarah cried. “When security tried to detain her, a black town car pulled into the ambulance bay, two men armed with handguns forced the security guards to the ground, and they took the cold-storage pharmaceutical lockbox containing the synthetic thallium isolates from your research lab!”

The world spun around me.

Synthetic thallium isolates.

Two years ago, my clinic had participated in an experimental oncology research trial testing micro-doses of heavy metal isotopes for targeted tumor therapy. The materials were locked in a bio-secure vault under dual-key authorization.

Victoria had stolen my keycard two weeks ago.

“They didn't just want the money, did they?” I whispered, looking back at Victoria.

Victoria laughed softly, a terrifying sound of absolute surrender to madness.

“If Carter failed to take Noah through the courts, my mother had a backup plan. If Noah died of acute, unexplained pediatric heavy-metal poisoning within forty-eight hours of your arrest, you would be charged with capital murder for poisoning your own son to claim his trust fund.”

Victoria looked right into my soul.

“She’s at the private marina on Shoreline Drive, Daniel. Her yacht leaves for international waters at 10:00 AM. And she’s already prepared the dosage.”
