Chapter 20 - The Voice on the Wire

Three months later.

The morning sun rose over the calm waters of Lake George, casting long golden beams across the wooden dock.

A brand new red canoe bobbed gently against the bumpers, tied to the cedar posts with clean nylon rope.

From the wrap-around porch of our new timber-frame home, the smell of fresh coffee and blueberry pancakes drifted through the open screen doors.

Noah was running through the green lawn with our new golden retriever pup, his laughter echoing across the water, clear and bright without a shadow of fear.

Grace walked out onto the porch holding two ceramic mugs, handing one to me. She was wearing an oversized wool sweater, her dark hair pulled back in a loose ponytail, smiling as she watched Noah tumble into the soft clover with the puppy.

“He ate four pancakes,” Grace chuckled, leaning against the cedar railing. “I think he’s trying to set a world record.”

“Let him,” I smiled, taking a sip of the hot coffee. “He’s got a lot of growing to do.”

The last twelve weeks had been a whirlwind of legal settlements and rebuilding.

Mercer Logistics had been restructured into a clean employee-owned trust. Frank Miller had pleaded guilty and received a reduced sentence in a minimum-security camp for his cooperation. Carter and Eleanor were locked inside separate federal detention wings in Terre Haute, awaiting formal sentencing that would ensure neither of them ever walked free under the open sky again.

The dark estate on Elm Ridge had been demolished, the land donated to the county as a public nature reserve named in memory of Elena.

Everything was quiet.

Everything was safe.

My phone rang from the wooden outdoor table behind us.

It wasn't my regular smartphone. It was an old encrypted satellite burner that federal marshals had seized from Eleanor Vance’s private safe on the yacht, which had been cleared and returned to my legal team as part of the asset forfeiture package.

The device shouldn't have been active. The service carrier had been terminated ten weeks ago.

Yet the screen was flashing green with an incoming call from an unlisted international satellite relay.

Grace and I looked at the phone.

The warmth of the morning sun suddenly seemed to vanish from the porch.

“Daniel,” Grace whispered, her voice dropping. “Don’t answer that.”

I set my coffee mug down on the railing.

I walked over to the table, picked up the cold plastic receiver, and hit the speaker button.

A long hiss of oceanic static crackled through the tiny speaker.

Then, a voice spoke.

It wasn't Carter. It wasn't Eleanor. It wasn't Victoria.

It was the smooth, cultured, unmistakable voice of a woman speaking with a faint European accent.

“Good morning, Dr. Mercer.”

I didn't speak. I kept my breath silent.

“You fought very hard to protect your son,” the voice said, calmly, coldly, with the terrifying poise of someone who operated in shadows far deeper than Eleanor Vance ever imagined. “You put Carter in a cage. You put Eleanor in chains. You thought you were dismantling an inheritance conspiracy.”

A soft, mocking laugh crackled through the static.

“Did you really believe eighty million dollars was the prize, Daniel? Did you really believe your wife Elena was just an architect?”

My blood turned to liquid nitrogen.

“Check the blue prints Elena hid in the foundation of your outpatient clinic, Daniel. Check Project Cerberus. What your wife stole from our consortium was worth billions. And now that Eleanor has failed to retrieve it... we are coming for you.”

Click.

The line went dead.

Across the lawn, Noah stood up from the grass, waving his small hands toward the porch with a bright, innocent smile.

“Dad! Aunt Grace! Look at the dog! He found a turtle!”

I lowered the dead phone in my hand, looking out at my five-year-old boy in the morning sun, knowing with absolute, terrifying certainty that the nightmare hadn't ended.

It had only just begun.
