Chapter 14 - The Mechanic’s Confession

State troopers swarmed the courthouse corridors, but I didn't wait for their tactical sweep.
I handed Noah to Grace under the protective custody of Captain Miller and two armed officers inside the courtroom.
“Keep him safe,” I told Grace.
“Daniel, wait! Don't go down there alone!” Grace pleaded.
“He killed Elena, Grace. I’m finishing this.”
I sprinted down the private service stairs behind Judge Hollister’s chambers, taking the steps three at a time. The air grew colder and smelled of damp concrete and motor exhaust.
I burst into Level B of the subterranean parking garage.
Tires screeched across the smooth concrete.
Carter’s black Mercedes SUV was hurtling toward the automated security gate, its twin-turbo engine roaring at full throttle.
The heavy iron security gate was still slowly rolling upward. Carter couldn't clear it. He slammed on the brakes, the tires smoking as the SUV skidded sideways, smashing into a concrete support pillar.
The front bumper crumpled with a metallic crunch. The driver’s airbag deployed with a loud pop.
I walked across the garage floor toward the smoking wreck.
Carter kicked the driver’s door open and crawled out onto the concrete, coughing through white powder from the airbag. He was clutching his broken ribs, his face covered in blood and sweat.
He saw my boots stop inches from his face.
Carter looked up, breathing in ragged, agonizing gasps. He didn't have a weapon. He didn't have his millions. He had nothing left.
“Go ahead, Dan,” Carter choked out, spitting blood onto the gray concrete. “Be the big man. Put a bullet in me. Finish what Dad started.”
I looked down at him. The rage that had burned inside me for the last twenty-four hours didn't explode into violence. It turned into something far colder: pure, absolute detachment.
“No, Carter,” I said quietly. “Death is too easy for you. Elena didn't get to run away to a luxury cell. She suffered.”
Behind us, the stairwell doors banged open. Captain Miller and half a dozen state troopers poured into the garage with assault rifles raised.
“Suspect is on the ground!” Miller shouted.
Two troopers descended on Carter, pinning him to the concrete and wrenching his arms behind his back with heavy steel cuffs. Carter groaned in agony as his broken ribs shifted, but nobody showed him any sympathy.
Captain Miller walked up beside me, handing me a sealed evidence bag containing Frank Miller’s handwritten confession and the original digital drive from the maintenance depot.
“Frank Miller turned state’s evidence thirty minutes ago, Doctor,” Miller said. “He gave us the whole timeline. The sabotage on your wife’s car, the bribes paid to Judge Hollister, the poisoning scheme with your son’s medication. Federal prosecutors are unsealing seven felony conspiracy indictments as we speak.”
Troopers dragged Carter to his feet.
As they walked him past me, Carter stopped. His eyes were wild, bloodshot, and filled with a venomous grin that made my hair stand on end.
“You think you won, Daniel?” Carter whispered, his voice rattling in his throat. “You think Victoria and I came up with this whole plan by ourselves?”
I stopped. “What are you talking about?”
Carter laughed—a wet, sickening cough.
“Look at the signatures on Noah’s trust documents, big brother. Check who authorized the original conservatorship clause five years ago before Dad died. Victoria was just the bait. I was just the muscle.”
Carter leaned closer before the troopers jerked him backward.
“The person who wanted Elena dead... is the person who introduced her to you.”
