Chapter 12 - Ambush at the Clinic

“No! Dad!” Noah shrieked, clutching my legs with all his strength. “Dad, don’t let them take me!”

Two burly bailiffs moved toward our table, their hands hovering over their utility belts.

“Your Honor, you haven't reviewed the telemetry logs!” I shouted, pulling the thumb drive from my pocket and slamming it onto the clerk’s desk. “Carter Mercer murdered my wife! He tampered with her vehicle’s braking system! The mechanic who installed the kill-switch confessed!”

Judge Hollister didn't even glance at the drive.

“Mr. Mercer, you are out of order,” Hollister said calmly. “Any claims regarding past settled accidents must be filed through standard civil proceedings. This is an emergency child welfare hearing. Bailiffs, remove Mr. Mercer from my courtroom if he continues to resist.”

Carter stood at his table, a faint, mocking smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

Victoria stepped forward with outstretched arms, putting on her softest maternal voice: “Come here, sweetie. It’s okay. Uncle Carter and Aunt Victoria are going to take you somewhere safe.”

Noah kicked at her shins when she reached for him. “Get away from me! You hurt my arm!”

Victoria hissed, pulling her leg back, her mask slipping for half a second before she caught herself.

“Judge Hollister,” Grace’s voice cut through the chaos, clear and resonant as a church bell.

She didn't stay at our table. She walked straight past the wooden barrier, stepping directly in front of the judge’s bench.

“Ma’am, step back behind the bar or you will be held in contempt!” Hollister barked.

Grace didn't step back. She pulled a blue legal folder from under her arm and opened it flat before the court stenographer.

“Judge Hollister, this is a certified financial disclosure from the Meridian Offshore Trust in Belize,” Grace said, her eyes locked on the judge with lethal precision. “Account number 4492. Registered to a shell company named Silver Oak Holdings LLC. The sole beneficiary of that account is your wife, Cynthia Hollister.”

The judge froze. The red pen in his hand hovered above the desk, motionless.

The courtroom fell dead silent. Even the bailiffs stopped in their tracks.

“Three wire transfers were made into that account over the last seven months,” Grace continued, her voice completely even. “Each transfer was for seventy-five thousand dollars. Sent directly from Carter Mercer’s logistics contingency slush fund. The last payment cleared forty-eight hours ago—the exact day Carter filed this emergency custody petition.”

Carter’s face went pasty white. “Your Honor, this is outrageous! She’s fabricating documents!”

“I am an authorized signatory on Silver Oak Holdings, Carter,” Grace said, turning around to face him. “Because our father set that company up thirty years ago before he gave it to my mother. You used a company you didn't even bother to trace. Every wire you sent passed through my family’s banking portal.”

Judge Hollister’s hand began to shake. The smug authority vanished from his eyes, replaced by the sheer, unadulterated panic of a man who realizes he has just walked into a federal bribery indictment.

“Your Honor,” I said, stepping forward beside Grace. “I suggest you recuse yourself from this hearing immediately, or those wire receipts will be delivered to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District within the next ten minutes.”

Hollister swallowed hard, his throat clicking. He looked at Carter, then at Grace, then down at the gavel.

Before the judge could open his mouth, the heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom burst open.

A man in a gray trench coat stepped inside. He had a scarred jaw, cold predatory eyes, and a silenced automatic pistol drawn from beneath his coat.

It was Victor Vance—Victoria’s older brother, the enforcer Carter kept on his corporate payroll.

“Nobody moves!” Victor yelled, raising the weapon toward the ceiling. “Carter, get the damn kid! We’re leaving!”
