CHAPTER 6: THE LETTER

A week later, I received a letter.

It was from my grandfather's lawyer. Not Nora. Another lawyer. A man named Arthur Crane.

I opened it with trembling hands.

It was a letter from my grandfather. Written before he died.

Dear Evie,

If you're reading this, I'm gone. And I suspect your family has already shown you who they really are.

I want you to know that you were always my favorite. Not because you were more talented or smarter than your brother. But because you were kind. You had a heart. You cared about people.

I'm sorry I couldn't protect you better. I'm sorry I left you to face them alone.

But I did leave you something. More than the trust. I left you a secret.

In my old study, behind the painting of the lake house, there is a wall safe. The combination is the date of your birthday. Inside, you'll find documents that will change everything.

Use them wisely.

With all my love,

Grandfather

I read the letter three times.

Then I read it again.

A secret. A wall safe. Documents that would change everything.

May you like

I knew I had to go back to the mansion. I had to find that safe.

But I had to do it without anyone knowing.
