CHAPTER 13: THE NEW BEGINNING

I sold the mansion.
I moved into a small house in the country. Not too big. Not too small.
I started a new business. A consulting firm. I helped other young women who had been exploited by their families.
It felt good. Meaningful.
I made friends. Real friends. People who didn't care about my money or my name.
And for the first time in my life, I felt truly happy.
I visited my mother in prison once.
She looked old. Tired. Broken.
"Evelyn," she said. "Why did you come?"
"I don't know. Maybe to say goodbye."
"You don't need to say goodbye. I'm still your mother."
"No. You lost that right when you tried to destroy me."
She said nothing.
May you like
I walked away.
And I didn't look back.
