CHAPTER 10: THE ARREST

It took two weeks for the police to build their case.

They arrested my mother on a Monday morning. My father had cooperated fully, providing evidence and testimony. Grant had tried to run, but they caught him at the airport.

I watched the arrest from a distance.

My mother came out of the house in handcuffs, her face twisted with anger. She looked toward me, and our eyes met.

She knew. She knew I had done this.

"Evelyn," she screamed. "You're going to regret this!"

I didn't respond. I just turned and walked away.

The trial was set for three months later.

I prepared for it.

And I was ready.
