CHAPTER 12: THE GRANDFATHER'S GIFT

After the trial, I went back to the mansion.

It was empty. My father had moved to a smaller house. Grant had disappeared. My mother was in prison.

The place felt cold. Dead.

But I knew what I had to do.

I walked to the study and opened the safe again. I took out the documents my grandfather had left me.

There was one more thing. A letter, folded and sealed with his signet ring.

I opened it.

Evie,

If you're reading this, you've already won. I knew you would.

I'm proud of you.

The house is yours now. All of it. The mansion. The lake house. The Florida property. Everything.

Use it to build a life. A real life. The kind of life I should have had.

And remember: you are stronger than you think.

With all my love,

Grandfather

I held the letter to my chest.

May you like

I had everything I needed.

And I was finally free.
