CHAPTER 14: THE REUNION

My father came to visit me on my twenty-first birthday.
He looked older. Grayer. But there was peace in his eyes.
"I brought you something," he said.
He handed me a small box.
Inside was my grandfather's signet ring.
"I should have given this to you a long time ago," he said. "You earned it."
"Thank you, Dad."
"I'm sorry for everything, Evie. For not protecting you. For not standing up to her."
"I forgive you."
We hugged.

And for the first time in years, I felt like I had a father.
A real one.
