Chapter 6 - The Name on the Photograph

Darius climbed into our SUV bleeding from the shoulder.

He said the gunmen worked for Adrian Mercer, chairman of Mercer International Bank.

The Mercers had managed Vale offshore structures for decades.

According to Darius, Luca discovered that Mercer created shadow beneficiaries and siphoned billions from family trusts.

Victor wanted Luca removed from authority.

Mercer wanted him dead.

Then Darius told me my father Marcus had not died when the family claimed he did.

The hospital death and closed-casket funeral had been staged to hide him from Mercer.

I nearly struck Darius again.

Mateo forced the conversation back to the present.

Darius said Luca had changed the encryption and built a hidden trust for a beneficiary nobody knew.

When Emma turned six, rights attached to that trust activated.

That explained the timing.

It also explained the hunt.

Then Mateo confessed that years earlier he had unknowingly given Victor the Brooklyn warehouse location that later reached Mercer.

He had gone back after realizing something was wrong.

The warehouse contained bodies, but Luca and Caleb were gone.

Mateo also found a small silver bracelet engraved with the name EMMA.

That was impossible because Clara's Emma had not yet been born.

Darius finally supplied the missing history.

My aunt Evelyn Vale had once had a daughter named Emma.

Evelyn and the child disappeared thirty-one years earlier after Evelyn tried to expose Mercer corruption.

The child's body was never found.

Luca had apparently named his daughter after that missing cousin.

Clara then produced the silver bracelet Luca had anonymously mailed after Emma's birth.

It matched Mateo's description exactly.

We reached Vermont before dawn.

The red-door house was burning.

Someone had arrived first.

Mateo and I entered the cellar through smoke and falling ash.

The silver and brass keys opened the cast-iron wolf's belly.

Inside was a black metal box.

Before I could remove it, a woman behind us cocked a pistol.

She was in her late thirties and had my father's eyes.

"My name is Emma Evelyn Vale," she said.

"And you are standing on property that belongs to me."
