Chapter 9 - The Therapist

Rachel’s private therapist reports looked official.
Dr. Victor Hale had seen Sophie six times.
Or so the custody filing claimed.
Sophie said she had met him twice.
Lena subpoenaed appointment records.
Two visits.
Four fabricated sessions.
Dr. Hale insisted Rachel provided notes from “home sessions.”
There were no home sessions.
Then Claire discovered Dr. Hale and Daniel Cross served on the same nonprofit board.
The web tightened.
Dr. Hale had never documented abuse disclosures.
But his handwritten intake notes contained one sentence missing from the final report.
SOPHIE STATES MOTHER “PUSHES WHEN MAD.”
The final report replaced it with.
CHILD DEMONSTRATES FANTASY-BASED BLAME DURING CONFLICT.
I stared at the words.
One sentence transformed a disclosure into pathology.
Dr. Hale claimed clinical judgment.
The licensing board disagreed enough to open an investigation.
Sophie did not celebrate.
She asked.
“Does this mean I wasn’t lying?”
I sat beside her.
“You never needed a report to make that true.”
She looked uncertain.
“But everyone needs papers.”
That sentence broke something in me.
She had learned that pain became real only after adults documented it.
I told her.
“The papers help adults do their jobs.”
“They don’t decide whether you hurt.”
She nodded slowly.
Then she whispered.
“There’s another thing Mom told me never to tell.”
I kept my face calm.
“What thing?”
Sophie looked toward the bedroom door.

“She made me practice what to say if a judge asked who I wanted to live with.”
