Chapter 3 - The Folder

The next morning, Rachel filed for emergency custody.
Her attorney claimed I had returned from a business trip, manipulated Sophie into making accusations, and removed her from the family home.
Attached were months of records.
Emails.
School notes.
Photographs.
A private therapist’s summaries.
Every page described Sophie as dishonest, oppositional, attention-seeking, and increasingly attached to me in an unhealthy way.
Then I found a second accusation.
Rachel claimed I had anger problems.
She included screenshots of messages where I appeared to threaten her.
I had never sent them.
My attorney, Claire Donovan, studied the filing.
“She prepared this before last night.”
“How long before?”
“Some exhibits are dated four months ago.”
Four months.
Rachel had been building a custody case while I was still booking flights home between projects.
Claire pointed at one paragraph.
Rachel claimed Sophie repeatedly injured herself during tantrums.
That explained the bruises before anyone could ask.
It was elegant.
Horrifying.
And almost convincing.
Then Claire smiled for the first time.
“What?”
“She made a mistake.”
Rachel had included the pediatric emergency call in her timeline.
The call was recorded.
The nurse had documented Rachel repeatedly interrupting Sophie and minimizing her pain.
The hospital report documented the same behavior.
Two independent records.
Created before Rachel knew there would be a custody fight that night.
Claire leaned back.
“Prepared evidence can be attacked.”
“Contemporaneous evidence is harder.”
Then my phone rang.
Sophie’s school principal wanted to speak with me.
There had been other incidents.
May you like
And Rachel had repeatedly ordered the school not to tell me.
