Chapter 18 - Learning Ordinary

A year later, ordinary things still surprised Sophie.

Spilling juice.

The first time it happened in my apartment, the glass hit the floor and shattered.

Sophie froze.

Her face went white.

“I’m sorry.”

I grabbed towels.

“It’s juice.”

“I didn’t mean to.”

“I know.”

She stared at me.

“What’s my punishment?”

“Shoes first.”

“What?”

“There’s glass.”

She put on shoes.

We cleaned together.

Ten minutes later, she began crying.

Not because I yelled.

Because I did not.

Naomi later told me predictable safety can feel overwhelming after unpredictable punishment.

I stopped trying to understand every reaction immediately.

Sometimes I simply stayed.

Sophie started sleeping through the night.

Her grades improved.

Then dipped.

Then improved again.

Recovery refused to become a straight line.

I reduced travel.

Not completely.

I needed to learn something too.

Protecting Sophie could not mean making her terrified whenever I left.

The first overnight trip after the trial was difficult.

I called once before bed.

Not ten times.

Sophie stayed with Amy.

When I returned, she ran to the door.

“Dad!”

That sound stopped me.

It was the sound missing from the night everything began.

I hugged her only after she opened her arms.

She whispered.

“I knew you’d come back.”

I answered.

May you like

“Always when I say I will.”
