Chapter 12 - Plan B

The financial complaint was sophisticated.
Fake invoices.
Vendor transfers.
My electronic approvals.
It looked real.
For about six hours.
Then my company’s forensic team found the access source.
My home computer.
Used while I was traveling.
Rachel knew my password.
Daniel had helped create shell vendors.
If the fraud appeared legitimate, I could lose my job.
Possibly face arrest.
Rachel would tell family court I was unstable, criminal, and desperate.
Plan B was not improvisation.
It had been built months earlier.
But Rachel made the same mistake again.
She created too much evidence.
Security logs showed I was physically in another state when several approvals occurred.
Two-factor records showed the home device bypassed normal procedures using saved credentials.
A camera inside our garage showed Daniel entering the house on one of those dates.
The embezzlement allegation collapsed.
Then it reversed.
Investigators opened a fraud case against Daniel and Rachel.
Daniel was detained at the Canadian border after attempting to return under a different itinerary.
Why return?
Because he had left something behind.
A hard drive.
Police found it in a safe at his office.
It contained draft custody filings for Rachel dated fourteen months earlier.
Also a document titled INCIDENT ESCALATION OPTIONS.
I could barely read it.
Create documented instability.
Increase child resistance.
Encourage father absence.
Preserve visible injuries as self-caused behavior.
My hands shook.
This was not a messy divorce plan.
It was a system.

And Sophie had been trapped inside it.
