Chapter 1 - The Report

The doctor closed the imaging folder and looked directly at my wife.

“Mrs. Bennett, hospital security is coming because Sophie’s injuries require us to make a child-safety report.”

Rachel stopped tapping her foot.

“What injuries?”

Dr. Maya Collins kept her voice calm.

“The bruise is not the only concern.”

I felt Sophie’s small fingers tighten around mine.

The scan showed a deep soft-tissue injury across her lower back.

There was also a healing rib fracture.

Not fresh.

Several weeks old.

I stared at the doctor.

“Sophie broke a rib?”

“It appears to have been fractured previously.”

Rachel stood.

“That is ridiculous.”

Dr. Collins did not react.

“Do you remember an incident that could explain it?”

Rachel answered before Sophie could.

“She fell off her bike.”

Sophie looked at the floor.

I remembered that week.

I had been in Denver.

Rachel called me and said Sophie had scraped her knee.

Nothing about a rib.

I turned toward my daughter.

“Sweetheart, did you fall off your bike?”

Her lips trembled.

“No.”

Rachel snapped.

“Sophie.”

Security entered.

Dr. Collins stepped between Rachel and the bed.

Sophie began crying.

Then she whispered something so quietly I almost missed it.

“That was the night Mom locked me in the laundry room.”

The room changed.

Rachel’s face went white.

I did not shout.

I did not touch her.

I simply looked at the doctor.

“Please write down exactly what she just said.”

Dr. Collins nodded.

“It already is.”

May you like

That was the first record Rachel could not erase.
