Chapter 6 - The Plan Before the Bruise
Daniel Cross denied any improper relationship with Rachel.
He said she consulted him about marital concerns.
That was legal.
Then Lena asked why he visited our home seventeen times.
He stopped answering.
Bank records gave us part of the explanation.
Rachel had opened a separate account.
She moved money from our joint savings.
Small amounts at first.
Then larger transfers.
Nearly eighty thousand dollars.
I thought she was preparing to leave.
Claire thought bigger.
“What happens if she gets sole custody?”
I knew immediately.
My company had grown dramatically in three years.
My income had changed.
Support calculations would be substantial.
But money did not explain hurting Sophie.
Claire agreed.
“This is not just about money.”
Then forensic analysis of Rachel’s custody folder revealed metadata.
Several photographs of Sophie’s “self-inflicted injuries” had been edited.
Dates changed.
Descriptions added later.
One photo showed a bruise on Sophie’s arm.
Rachel labeled it AFTER SOPHIE THREW HERSELF AGAINST WALL.
The original image contained something cropped out.
Rachel’s hand.
Her fingers were wrapped around Sophie’s wrist.
The photo had been taken in a mirror.
Rachel had accidentally photographed herself restraining Sophie.
Claire stared at the uncropped image.
“That goes to the judge.”
Before she could file it, Sophie called from my sister’s house.
She was crying.
“Dad, Mom is here.”
I stood so fast my chair fell backward.
A temporary protective order prohibited Rachel from approaching Sophie.
But through the phone, I heard Rachel’s voice.
“Open the door, sweetheart.”
