Serena entered wearing the ring.

Julian looked at it. "Take it off."

Her face tightened. "Can we talk first?"

"No."

She removed it and placed it on the table.

A small circle of platinum.

That was the end.

Serena admitted she suspected Maya was Julian's child.

She admitted reading the old settlement file.

She admitted choosing not to tell him because the Hale transaction was close to approval.

"I was going to tell you after closing."

Julian laughed without humor. "After."

"Do you know what happens if that deal collapses? Employees. Pension investors. Two hotel projects."

"Then the board prices the truth."

"You sound naive."

"No. I sound late."

Serena's lawyer slid a flash drive across the table.

Serena said Gideon had threatened to release old documents making Julian look complicit in the housing scheme if she cooperated.

Julian did not touch the drive.

"Maybe I am complicit."

Serena stared.

"You didn't know."

"Then the records should show that."

He stood.

"You spent months deciding which truth I could survive."

Serena whispered, "I love you."

Julian believed her.

That made it worse.

Outside, Mara called.

Gideon Price had tried to board a private charter flight.

Border officials stopped him before takeoff.

In his luggage police found three hard drives, forty thousand dollars in cash, and an envelope for Eleanor.

The envelope contained a draft statement claiming Nora fabricated the allegations after an unsuccessful attempt to obtain money from the Blackwoods.

Eleanor had not signed it.

That mattered.

Not enough to erase the past.

Enough to define the present.

Then Mara said, "There is something else. Gideon had a document bag in his luggage. Nora says it belonged to her."

Julian felt Nora go still beside him.

"What's inside?"

Mara looked at Julian.

"A photograph showing Serena with Richard and Gideon seven years ago."

Serena's attorney tried once to frame the surveillance as a prenuptial due-diligence issue. Julian stopped him. Due diligence verifies risk for a decision-maker. It does not create a private narrative around a child and hide the result from the person supposedly being protected. Serena did not argue with that. Her silence became one of the few things Julian respected about the meeting.

When he returned the engagement ring to the jeweler rather than keeping it in a drawer, the clerk asked whether he wanted store credit. Julian laughed for the first time in days. Even grief, apparently, had a refund policy.

Julian turned toward Serena.

She had known Nora's story long before she claimed to discover it in the prenup file.
