Chapter 2 - The Key With No Lock

The engagement gala ended without an announcement. No final champagne. No photographs. Guests left in clusters, carrying a story none of them fully understood.

Maya sat in the library with a blanket around her shoulders while a pediatric paramedic checked her knees.

Julian stayed close but did not touch her unless she reached first. Biology was not permission.

Detective Mara Quinn arrived from the Oak Park missing-persons unit because Nora Bell had already been reported missing.

"Already?" Julian asked.

Mara looked at him carefully. "Her neighbor called this morning. Apartment door open. Blood on the kitchen tile. Child missing."

Julian's stomach turned.

Maya stared at the floor. "I hid in the laundry room."

Mara crouched. "Did you see who took your mother?"

"Two men. One had a gray jacket. One wore gloves."

"Did they say anything?"

Maya nodded. "Where is the packet?"

Julian looked at Eleanor.

His mother gave nothing away.

Maya reached into her backpack. There was no packet. Only a toothbrush, a bottle of water, two granola bars, and six envelopes tied with string.

All were addressed to Julian Blackwood.

All were unopened.

All were returned.

Julian picked up the first. The date was seven years earlier. The newest was four months ago.

"These never came here."

Eleanor spoke from the doorway. "You cannot know that."

"I open my personal mail."

"Your staff handled correspondence for years. Your father protected you from distractions."

Julian stared at her. "Nora was a distraction?"

Serena entered behind Eleanor. "Julian, Maya needs rest."

Mara raised a hand. "Ms. Hale, unless you have information about Nora Bell's disappearance, please wait outside."

Serena did not move.

Julian said, "Go."

Her eyes flashed, but she left.

Mara put the letters into evidence sleeves.

"Did Nora ever tell you why she and Julian separated?"

Maya shook her head. "She said adults lied."

Mara examined the brass key. "Any idea?"

Julian shook his head.

Then Maya pointed toward a framed photograph on the library shelf. Julian's late father, Richard Blackwood, stood beside the original headquarters of the Blackwood Community Foundation. On the stone wall behind him was a row of small brass deposit lockers.

Maya held up the key. "Like that."

Julian remembered the old records room. Most of the lockers had been removed after the building was sold to a foundation subsidiary, but the site still belonged to Blackwood interests.

Mara asked, "Who controls access now?"

"I do. Technically."

Eleanor said sharply, "No. The building is unsafe."

Everyone looked at her.

Julian's eyes narrowed. "You recognized the key."

Eleanor said nothing.

Maya whispered, "Mama said Grandma would lie first."

The word Grandma hit Julian harder than the accusation.

Then Mara's phone rang.

She listened, glanced at Serena through the open doorway, and said, "Your fiancee's name just appeared in the missing-person investigation."

Serena walked back in. "That is ridiculous."

Mara turned her phone around. A building camera showed Serena's private investigator outside Nora's apartment the day before.

Julian looked at the woman he planned to marry in six weeks.

"Why was your investigator watching the mother of my daughter?"
